Cockpit TV

Update: I got a call from Defender yesterday. The 2009 model of the Jensen JE1909, 19" HDTV, AD/DC will not be out until April. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the JE 1908 (2008 model).

Big Pluses:
19"
HDTV w/tuner
DC power
800 contrast (1909 will have 1000 contrast)
Circuit boards coated for corrosion resistance
Internal components mounted to rigid framework, not exterior plastic

It's designed for marine use.

I may move it inside next Spring when the 1909 comes out for 3 reasons: I need to change out the tv inside (or do a converter box), the higher contrast will be better for cockpit use, and the 1909 has the controls on the front. The 1908 has them on the side, which may be inconvenient.

Last chance on comments?

Why not wait till spring and get through the winter without the cockpit TV......OH...that's right...you southern bastards (little 'b') don't HAVE winter!!!....

While visiting AC in water boat show I took some pics of cockpit TVs I liked. I think this is the nicest installation:

This one has slightly different mount but very close.

I got a quote from MM on the mount similar to what on the pictures, it's abround $250.

Mike,

Do you have similar Sharp with DVD as in the first picture?

all great posts, love the pictures. this is why i visit this site every day. Now with all the hot air out of the way, what about the cables for tv ant. How is it run? I know power (AC 110V) is under the sink but what about speakers and tv ant? Where did everyone tape off of? thanks

Yes it has the DVD player in the side. I think it's a Sharp and is DTV and analog compatible. To be honest I don't use it much as the TV reception is poor at our area/marina, that's why we are considering a KVH Sat Dome. Would be nice to watch the ball games at the boat.

Mike

yea i agree dvd would be primary but when at dock my marina has cable tv hook up and I rather not have the cable laying across the deck when sr has an input in the trasom locker.

Alex - I really like the mount you've pictured above...You mentioned a retailer for a similar mount, "MM"....Who are they?

Marine Max - Sea Ray parts from larger boats, I'm guessing.

WOW, you guys really like TV...my wife would pull it off the mount and throw it in the water because my "nose would be glued to it" and not listening to her! In my area, I can't imagine watching it at night for all the bugs it would draw.

The part number for the Sea Ray mount is

1807962 MOUNT, CKPT TV POST 18.5"

I seen the mount and it's a great way to go however it's about $250 from my MM dealer I may try a different approach. Where does every one tap into the ant /cable signal?

I just ordered this set. There are three parts: Mount and Pole 1807962; Base 1807963; Grommet 1013762. The prices are: 129.36, 138.46, and 11.70. Some of the numbers are the same on different boats.

BOE Marine sent me the 2009 model, and as of today, it's in my boat.

I got advice from Frank W on how to tap into the cables, but found that the mid-cabin berth TV was only a few feet away, so, I tapped into there:

From a private message to Teekster:

"I removed the ceiling TV in the mid-cabin berth. I removed the clear panel in the cabinet below that TV. I removed the support rack that holds the cockpit cooler, which then allowed me to remove the panel behind that cooler in the port side gunwale, under the bar. I drilled a hole in that panel, routed the wires through it, and they fell on top of the battery charger. I drilled a hole in the wood paneling within the confines of the ceiling TV's mounting trim. I routed the wires through there, then split the signals from the back of the ceiling TV.

That way, I have signals from one of the cabin DVD players (don't know which one yet - don't really care) and from the cable TV/antenna, depending on the power setting on the Glomax panel."

First impression:

1) Only 2 HDTV stations in our area right now.
2) Fantastic mounting using the pole/holder from the 48
3) Great signal - have cable, antenna (when glomax control turned on) and forward DVD
4) Not as bright during day as I wanted - I'll check tonight for night ops

It plays 100% on DC power including DVD power. This is a huge bonus. For those who will say that an AC powered TV would be brighter, not so fast. LCD screens are all 12V DC.

Stereo sound comes from matching the mid-cabin tv to the same source and using that FM transmitter to the stereo. DVD concerts, here I come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We're taking the boat to Bay Point again tomorrow afternoon to watch the Fl - Al game, and then attend a Christmas party in the evening, and then sleep on the boat over night, so, I'll post the pics early next week.

Note to HDTV installers:

A bad cable connection in the network with a std tv will result in a little snow or distortion. With HD, you either get the picture, or you don't. The BIG game was on channel 4 and 4.1 (4.1 was the HD channel). 4.1 didn't come in. 4 did. 5 and 5.1 both came in. I removed the glomax control panel and reset each of the connections. My analog TV cleared up some.

Then, I removed the transom locker cable hookup assembly and true-ed up the connection by removing the cable connector, bending back more shielding wires, and making sure none of the wires were touching. After re-assembling, HD Ch 4.1 came in clear. The JE 1909 is simply an OUSTANDING TV, especially for sports in HD.

Now I need to put more mount bases around the boat - gunwale for watching tv on dock....

Thanks for the heads up John. I have a feeling that soon enough you'll be shopping for M2 or M3 ,.

I took advantage of black friday and got nice 22" HDTV Sharp with DVD player. As you can immagine, my installation will be on hold for the next few months before we get above freezing temps here :smt089. Since the TV has internal adapter, I'll have to use an inverter (I already have one that would work fine. It's 800W peak), which I'll need to find a good place to mount. At this point I'm thinking on getting SR OEM mount as they have on 440-480DAs. It's about $250, but very slick looking. I've noticed that they have 2 different types. Here's one of them.

This is the mount that came on our boat. Works very well and the TV is easy to install/remove.

That's what I bought and used to mount. I'm going to add more bases to move it around.

John,

Did you get the Jensen TV? Can you take some pictures of the back, bottom, and sides?
