Cockpit AC is it worth it $$$ ?Does it make a difference?

Good to see i found some of us guys!!

Skip hows the boat treating u .. miss the stories.

To address the cockpit a/c. 16,000 btu is not enough .

On real hot days when u need it we come up short.

Even at the dock with the canvas ( blk ) on it hot underneath.

I was looking to add an aditional unit adj to the existing.

But instead of using a package unit ( compressor and blower together ) i was looking at installing a split type system. Compressor and conddensor in the bilge and the blower and evap coil going adj to the existing unit.

Tiara has 30,000 btu unit in there cockpit a/c's.

But im not sure i can pull this off. Still in the measuring stages.

With that said . I think the cockpit unit is more worth while for its heat attributes then cooling.

Look forward to reading all the stories I have missed.

Hello welcome Rob

I think you have to take a week off to read what has been discussed here

This might work down below, but you really need lots of cooling capacity to do a helm that is covered with canvas. My 37 had dark canvas and the helm became unbearable when we were is a slip and it was the heat of the day, say....105 in the sun. The heat would radiate down from the canvas a good 12" inches or so. You need a hardtop to do this right and a drop curtain too. I can put a thermometer on the back deck on a hot day. It will read 115 in the sun. Under the hardtop with no air, it reads around 92. Turning the air on gets it down to the mid 70's and it keeps dropping from there as the sun goes lower in the sky.

Ok , but I think because the cooling capacity is 22,000 BTU and you can mount this unit direct in your engine room, you must have some effect in your cockpit.

Rob,
Welcome back, glad to have another 42/44 Captain aboard.
<temporary thread hijack> We had a great season. 147 Trouble free hours, and I did all the winterization myself..learned a lot and it was really pretty simple, thanks in large part to some thoroflush strainer cap equivalents a friend made for me. I can send you my winterization checklist and notes if you want. How did you guys do this summer? <end of hijack>
We really did not miss Cockpit A/C. While I think the 9KW Onan could handle the load, it just is not worth the money for us, especially with the black sunbrella soft top. Opening up the isenglass to let some air flow, turning on the fans, and running the aft a/c unit on high worked just fine.
