I decided to update my SL70CRC charts this year using the $89/hr Jeppesen Club program. I got my new chart last week and there are issues with compatibility with my older SL70CRC unit. At certain zoom levels, chart data is not displayed in some areas with the message "no chart data". For me, this happens at 3/4nm zoom and tighter with "Chart Display" set to "detailed". If I change the "Chart Display" setting to "simple", then it seems to properly display all the chart data down to 1/2nm zoom.

Here is a link to a more detailed explanation of the problem and Raymarine's response: http://raymarine.ning.com/forum/top...not-work-properly-on-rl70c?xg_source=activity

I plan to call Jeppesen tomorrow and talk with them about it. I'll either ask for my $89 back and return the new chart card (I still have the old one - I am supposed to return it as part of the program, but I have not yet) or, if they plan on fixing the problem, keep both cards until I get the solution working.

I have no idea what I miss by setting "Chart Display" to SIMPLE rather than DETAILED. Is the difference important?

I've learned more. I found this in my manual:

"The cartographic detail available on charts varies according to the chart scale and some areas include detail at smaller scales than others. This can cause blank areas on the display when adjacent areas with different levels of detail are displayed. To reduce this affect you can use the Chart Set Up options to set chart display detail to SIMPLE. Then, as you zoom in, charted areas are displayed but with less detail shown."

The area I am having problem is around my marina and some adjacent marinas. There is now detailed chart data of my marina and these adjacent marinas that shows actual slips and docks. These areas are boxed in on the screen with hashed lines. The previous version of this chart didn't have any of that. Everything on those older charts seemed to have the same level of detail. So, now with the new charts when I am at my marina I have to set the plotter to SIMPLE mode to avoid having a mismatch of detail inside the marina and outside the marina. Once that detailed area of the marina is no longer on the screen, then DETAILED mode works fine. Basically, the CMAP folks overachieved for my plotter by creating so much detail for my marina.

Not sure this will help anyone, but I thought I'd post it for reference.

When I bought Beachcomber all the nav chips were from the Great Lakes area. I ordered PNW chips and they arrived in time for us to bring the boat home from Portland. When I installed the chip it wouldn't work with my setup. The MFD kept rebooting. A phone call to Raymarine disclosed the problem was because the software in the chips was more recent than the software in my Raymarine MFD. They sent out a chip to update the MFD's software.

Unfortunately it didn't arrive until after we got the boat home. We ended up piloting using charts and the GPS position.
