Putting the boat away for the winter - would you wax the stainless steel rails or use never dull?

Other ideas? I am all ears...

I use the buffer that I use when waxing the boat. It shines up real nice. After that I just wipe down the bow rails when I wash the boat.

If you have any rust starting to form I would use a more aggressive product like never dull and then wax. Another great product to protect is Shark Hide.

Never dull works for me.

Terrific - so you wax them and use the wheel to buff them off?
I run the buffer wheel along all the rub rails after I've waxed the boat. There's always enough wax left on the pad to clean them up nice. After that, when I wash the boat I just rub them down with the soapy brush I'm using on the deck and rinse them off. A quick drying with a clean towel makes them really shine.

I use Buff magic with a old buffing pad just for that and can make the rail look better than chrome.

Never Dull is what you want....trust me. My cover cap for my windless looked like brushed pewter now it's truly stainless.

My rails are badly tarnished. Any ideas how to get the tarnish off and bring back the shine?

Powell, read back through this thread and you'll find your answers. If they're really bad, attack them with a buffer and maybe some light cutting compound, then wax over them with a different buffing pad.

I would first wash them down with "The Works" blue cap toilet bowl cleaner. Caution: do this before hull cleanup and if needed may just buy a case of it and wash the deck and hull with it (it is prediluted muratic acid, so a version of acid washing).

I then used a die grinder with 3M 2" pads and a metal polish to deep clean, gets black tarnish in places you do not want it, so be careful with it, hard to get off the gelcoat that is stripped. Then follow up with a hi-tech polish to seal it.

After a deep clean like that a quick hit with cleaner wax or the like will brighten it back up and quick wipe of polish for sealer.

Awesome, I’ll get some and give it a try and let you know the results
Barkeeps Friend. Publix for about 50 cents a can. Great for removing rust stains. Damp cloth, make a paste in the cloth and rub. Wash off, and wipe down.

Flitz has worked for me. Have a can from 1997 that is about 1/5 used up. It does the job, lasts a long time on stainless rails, etc., and goes a long way.

I like Flitz but I just ordered some Collinite 850 from Autogeek the other day. I really like their liquid wax products and figured I’d give their metal product a shot.

I tried Nevr-Dull and with some effort it did a good job. Also the wadding isn’t messy
