Okay, this one has me and the Admiral a bit stumped and freaked out.

We bought this boat back in December and splashed it the first week of April. Now that it's nice out and we are spending much more time in the boat, we are starting to use the Clarion stereo much more ... sort of.

The radio will play for about 5-10 minutes, then it will shut down completely, and then in another 5-10 minutes, it will power on again and start playing again. I have looked at the display panel of the stereo and noticed that all the power is off (or so it seems, and the display panel is dark). Not even pressing the power switch on the remote in the helm or on the unit itself will start it back up again.

Does anyone have any ideas on where to start looking to fix this? Has anyone ever experienced this before?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I am having the exact same issue and service can not figure out what is causing it. Prior to this issue, the stereo would "automatically turn up to max volume" which I thought was a stuck switch on one of the remotes. We disconnected the steering wheel remote and the "auto turn up" stopped, but now the radio simply turns off after 15-30 minutes (nothing consistent). None of the buttons (change bands, volume, etc.) work when it gets into this mode. If I open the front panel, it seems to re-set. As I am under warranty I think they are simply now going to replace the head unit. I welcome anyone's input or thoughts on what may be causing this issue as well.

You are correct in that the time frame to 'turn off" and "turn on" is not consistent. I really do not want to replace the unit. There has got to be a fix ... right?

it could be overheating!

Thought about that, but then I opened the door to the starboard console storage area (where the unit and amp are) and waited for it to turn back on, and even with the door open it turned back off.

I suppose that's a possibility, but it's a boat and a marine radio, how much cooler can I make it in there?

is radio on circuit breaker and fuse check grounds. Heat will be in a minute area maybe on a circuit board in the radio. maybe you have a weak circuit breaker. take your remotes out of the circuit un plug them see if problem goes away. got a ohm meter when it quits check for power check resistance in switches

First, my disclaimer. This is the first time I've posted and I will not claim to be an expert. Not even sure how this will look in the thread. I figured you are looking for ideas or similar experiences. I too have a Clarion in my boat. It has done the shutting off by itself and I think I remember the panel being blank. Also, anything that was preset is usually lost. I believe it is related to the voltage you have in the system. I noticed when the batteries are fully charged it doesn't exhibit the problem. Clarion maybe too sensitive and if your batteries are in good shape then might need to check connections as in above postings to find voltage drop. I haven't checked my connections because charging batteries has worked for me. Hope this helps. (I hit submit and . . .)

I had a similiar issue, factory Clarion stereo, steering wheel controls and dash remote. Unit would turn on and off by itself.
Problem was a faulty dash remote unit. Found a brand new replacement on eBay for $175 (about half the price of Sea Ray), easy install.

most likely an moisture/ bad ground issue. hard to figure esp. if you have the transom mounted remote..

I don't know if this would help or not but I would try doing a reset of the system. On mine the reset button is located behind the display face (where you insert a CD).

Yes, I have seen this be the cause sometimes as well. Easy way to test is pull the stereo head out, disconnect the remotes from the back, use, and see if problems go away. If no more issues, then agree - the remote.

My Clarion which is original to my boat and probably much older than yours does this magical on/off behavior as well. I had a friend who is good with car stereos tell me that the cause is a faulty/broken connection between the face plate and the main unit. Big PITA but I don't listen to the radio enough to worry about it.
