Clarion Remote Control problem

The remote control unit on the dash is not displaying any information on the LCD screen although all of the buttons work properly. I recently purchased this boat and it has not worked since purchased. Am I missing something or has the unit gone bad?

there is two options:
1) stereo or stereo and remote was upgraded to newer model but remote cable wasn't changed. Old style remotes didn't have lcd display. New style use same plug but there is more wires inside cable.
2) remote is n/g

To check that: first find manual for your stereo and find if it is fully compatible with remote. With combination of older radio and newer remote buttons will work but no or garbled display.
Second: when you verify that units are compatible - disconnect remote from extension cable and plug it directly to plug on back of your stereo. This way you will eliminate bad/wrong cable used.
