Anyone know the pricing / availability of transient slippage for a marina in chicago?

(Im planning on heading up there the middle of next week for the Taste of Chicago - and just wondering if there's anywhere to park for the day)

Thanks

That's the link for the City of Chicago harbor system. They recommend that you call ahead to make reservations for transient dockage. Because of Taste you might have a number of people already with reservations at Monroe.

I have had good luck when I went up to Chicago by calling the Du Sable Harbor Master and asking if I could use a slip for a few hours.

He has always accommodated me.
Even went up ther a couple years ago on July 3 for the afternoon before the fireworks.
From there is is about a 1/2 mile walk to Navy Pier and the Taste.

Thanks Dan, I'll keep that in mind just in case.

I actually was able to get a reservation lined up at Monroe Harbor.... so hopefully im all set.

Now all I have to do is hope that the weather cooperates!

Thanks again!

(Oh, Dan, PS - Im no longer in Portage... due to the flooding of the Burns Waterway last year...we moved over to East Chicago dry stack)

Jason
Yes I thought you were out of Portage.
When you are out and about swing through Hammond.

We are on R-16 with an open slip on either side.
Stop in for a beer.
Let us know when you will be heading up to Taste.

Dan, I heard there are alot of empty slips at Hammond this year; is it due to Indiana wanting out-of-state registrations changed to in-state??

Paul

I believe we have around 1100 slips, with the addition and reconfiguration after the new Horseshoe Casino Boat.

That said, the new W Dock, the S Dock, and the old existing U Dock (which is now shorter) are almost empty.

I am on the R Dock (40 foot) and we have 18 open slips.

I was told they have 450+ open slips.

And to answer your question, Yes it is about the excise tax.
Mine was $500+ dollars for 1.5 years on a 1992 Boat.

I have always said..... I pay taxes on the slip, I pay taxes on all of the fuel I buy, I pay taxes on all of the food, beverages and beer I buy and I support all of the local restaurants, yet we still have to pay an excise tax "to boat" in Indiana Waters.

That is exactly how the rules are written. "To Boat In Indiana Waters"

Makes sense. Right???
Dan

My $0.02 cents worth.

Daze Off,

How do you like the rack storage in East Chicago? I currently have rack storage on the Cal-Sag but I'm considering moving to Crowely's LakeSide. Crowely's just started rack storage couple weeks ago.

Wow! I remember the summer of 2006, we were in J Dock - you couldn't find an open slip anywhere in that place!!

Yeah
I've been ther 15 years and this is the fewest boats I have ever seen.

I was going to take some pictures to post up this weekend.

Dan,

Definitely will keep that in mind... actually we were through there 2 weeks ago.
I was completely surprised as to how many slips are still available... that was shocking.
Actually, the dry rack is only 60% full... there's availability everywhere.... gotta be a bad season for the marinas...

I'd offer you the same... but its just not that fun drinking up in the rafters of the dry racks LOL

As of right now were planning on heading up to the taste on Wednesday - weather permitting. Monroe Harbor has us on reservation... hopefully everything goes as planned (especially since I have a few of my wife's friends already planning on showing)

So far so good.
The drivers there are great. Im actually surprised as to how meticulous they are with the boats... treat em like their own.

My only complaint so far is the hours of service.

Until July 1st - their mid-week hours are 8am to 4pm. Which means no boating after work until July... and then the In/Out service is closed on Oct 1st (and I know a couple of times previous years where I was boating in Oct)

Otherwise Im happy with it so far.

I did hear that they were opening a new In/Out service... didnt know where though until you mentioned that. I think I've been past there... Crowleys is just north of the Skyway on the river right?

Daze Off,

That's correct 95th and Cal-Sag. Little bit north of the Skyway bridge.
