Hello,
I will be making the trip in early May from Chester CT to Boston. Chester is equal to the tip of L.I. Sound CT side. Has anyone here made this trip? I was just wondering roughly about how long it should take to make the trip if baring any weather or mechanical setbacks. I will be traveling in a New to me 1988 Searay 300 weekender twin inboards 350's. with experienced Captain. Just looking for a rough estimate.

Thanks,
Witch

It will depend alot on your average speed made good, factoring wind, seas, etc. It's about a 140nm run. Assuming 20-25kts you'd be looking at 6 to 7 hours of steady hauling. I'd budget 8 hours. Of course I also asssumed you'd be going up Buzzard's Bay and through the Canal.

Thank you,

Yes through the canal and I will try to time it right.

I have a 2 week window the first 2 weeks in May. I appriciate your answer.

If you want a more leisurely pace, I'd recommend stopping over at Cuttyhunk and Plymouth.

If you are going direct without stopping other than fuel in the canal, then assuming you are going deep into Boston Harbor.......Lets remember this is still May, I would allow for 10 hours.......Going through the canal is slow (watch out for the black canal boats)......

Traffic in the canal could be an issue, but I usually run it in 20 minutes. It is only 7.5nm after all

witchhouse, obviously how fast you are able to run will make this either a 6 hour trip or a 12 hour trip. Pick a calm day and its a fun ride. Hit some rough seas and you'll be taking a lot longer. You don't have any no-wake zones in the way until the inner harbor of Boston, so its a clear route.

Be sure to check the current predictions. You will have a number of places where the current will affect your fuel burn and SOG significantly. Pay particular attention to the CT River, Watch Hill Passage and the CC Canal.
