Has anyone visited Chesapeake City off the Chesapeake Bay? I was told this was a nice place with lots to see and do. The couple that told us compared it to Annapolis, MD.
My wife and I love Annapolis and are always looking for new places to visit on the bay. So far we've visited Baltimore Harbor, Annapolis, up the Sassafrass, Kent Island, and St. Michaels.

Chesapeake City is a fine destination, but I can't imagine how anyone could compare it to Annapolis. CC is much, much smaller. It's on a small man-made cove off of the C&D canal. It has a couple of marinas and waterfront restaurants and a quaint little town to walk around. If you go the last weekend in June for "Canal Days" be prepared for some interesting people watching. To give you a point of reference, you said you've been to St. Michaels; Chesapeake City is smaller than St. Michaels.

And before anyone gives me grief, I am NOT anti-Chesapeake City, it is a nice place to visit. I am just warning that if someone went there expecting to find Annapolis, they would be disappointed.

Jeff, I've been there and spent about 4 days. While I wouldn't say it's quite comparable to Annapolis or Baltimore, we did have a great time. The town is about a 10 minute walk and it is nice. There's a nice wine shop to which we wound up going every day. There's also a boardwalk that runs along the beach in the other direction from the town. Also, there's a water park across the street that looked like it'd be a lot of fun for kids. It wasn't open when we were there, though, as it was pretty late in the year.

Hope this helps.

Jeff, All of the above, they dredged 2 years ago in the cove so you have good water. The Tap Room is great for Crabs. Chesapeake Inn located in the cove has bands, good food and drinks...If you like antiques and junk stores it's a cool place to roam. Andy is the dock master at the Inn....one or two days and you will have seen the town. When diesel was cheap we went up about 2 x a month...

Chesapeake City is "man made" its okay for an overnighter, but no way does it even come close to St. Michaels or Annapolis. The Tap Room (old school bar) is good for crabs and beer and the Inn has the best brick oven pizza and a great deck, Saturday night it’s jumping with the locals and live music.
I recommend that you Dock @ noon on Sat and shove-off Sun morning, call for slip reservation.

Thanks guys, I'm sure we'll check it out this summer but it's nice to know what to expect.
Are there any other places on the bay to visit that share similarities to Annapolis?

I agree with Summerwind, Chesapeake City is a great place to spend a day. The Bayard House has grat first class food. There are a lot of interesting shops there, but it is a lot smaller than St Michaels. A Saturday evening can be a lot of fun, it is a party place. Best part it is a no wake zone that is enforced so you don't get bounced around. We like it.

Larry, I think you are referring to Chesapeake Beach instead of Chesapeake City. We boat in this area and run up there alot to go to the Inn for dinner. In my opinion it is not a place to stay more than one night. Also, the Inn can get pretty rowdy on the weekends so it's not always a quiet place to stay. I don't see how anyone could compare it to Annapolis either.

Oops, Aaron is right. I was describing Chesapeake B E A C H.

Chesapeake C I T Y is also a fun place to go. Again, it's no Annapolis. The Inn has live music most/all nights and it can be a "lively" crowd, but I never got the feeling it was a rough place. I'd definitely go back.

We enjoy Tighlman Island - it is no Annapolis but a fun run from there to Oxford and/or Hyatt.
We stay at The Inn at Knapp's Narrows Marina. Derrick is dock master.

Lowes Wharf Marina and Inn is a fun place to have lunch on the beach. Very limited menu but great view.

Another fine destination is Rock Hall. Small town charm, very "St. Michaels like" in my opinion. Also, a bit of a ride, but I always liked the trip up the Chester River to Chestertown - haven't been there for three years - perhaps others can speak to how Chestertown is doing.

If you are going at the end of June, June 27th is Canal Day and you may wanna do your homework about that kind of adult event?

Gone by it many times while making the passage to Ocean City. Doesn't look like Annapolis to me. I've never taken one of my boats thru the canal, just my buddy's charter boat that he relocates to OC every year. Personally I don't want all that crap that floats thru the canal bouncing off my hull. Believe me there is a lot!!!!!!!

We typically get to Chestertown once per season because it is such a pretty ride up the river. Unfortunately, the town is not doing very well as a boating destination because for some reason they do not cater to the boaters. The Chestertown Marina has been sold and re-worked somewhat, but reports are that at low tide you can end up sitting in the muck.

Anchoring out and taking the dink in can be an adventure. Last year we wanted to go past the bridge and raft up in calmer waters, but the operator could not figure out how to raise the dang bridge. So, we anchored just off the town dock and got slammed around by all the idiots that have never learned how to be courteous boaters. Also, the current on this river changes direction with the tidal change which can make anchoring a bit dicey.

Much smaller than Annapolis and somewhat smaller that St. Michaels, but it has a similar feel. The town on the south side of the canal is only about 4 blocks wide by 4 blocks long, but very nice. There's usually plenty of room to anchor in the basin, or you can get a slip at the Chesapeake Inn. The city dock is free, unless you get water or electric, but almost always full. Chesapeake Inn is a busy place, and usually pretty packed on weekends. There's a fancier restaurant in the upstairs. Downstairs and on the deck is a live music tiki bar kind of place. The Tap Room in town is good for crabs. Bayard House is a fancier place, but very good. Another nice place it the Yacht Club restaurant. The Bohemia Cafe is great for breakfast, but we've never tried dinner there. If you make the trip, you might also try a great new restaurant a few miles east on the canal called Aqua Sol at Summit North Marina. It's a pretty good place that also has live music, but not packed like the Chesapeake Inn.
