Chesapeake Bay Wind Conditions

Funny you should ask. Last Sunday they were predicting 5-10kts mid-day and 15-20 later on. By 11:00am the winds were rocking. The 20 was probably accurate but the timing way off.

I was thinking the same thing. We were rafted up with a 43' Cruisers in Fairlee Creek Saturday afternoon. We changed our plans and stayed overnight after checking the weather report on the VHF.

We got our butts kicked on the way home with 4 to 5 footers hitting us from the side the whole way. I had to run at 10kts. It probably would have been a lot easier (and more fun) to head south past our marina and then do a u-turn and head back up to it.

We would have come back to our marina Saturday night if the forecast said 20kt winds instead of 5-10kt winds on Sunday. :smt021

I made a post about this very day in Gary's "hate weathermen" thread in the General Discussion forum. I too was out on Sunday, and left a 1/2 hour after checking that the marine forecast was "Winds S 5-10, waves 1ft or less".

Well, once we were out for a couple of hours, near Point Lookout, it was getting pretty rough for us so I flipped on the VHF radio to the forecast. "Small Craft Advisory in effect until 9pm. Winds S gusting to 20, waves 1-2ft."

Can't believe them for anything.

You guys are also familiar with the NOAA buoys around the bay? they are very useful to monitor current conditions on location before heading their direction. http://www.buoybay.org
