chesapeake bay marinas

If you're looking for a spot between the mouth of the Chspk Bay and Norfolk, then one of the options is Littl Creek Inlet. I've stayed in East Beach Marina. Nothing special, decent price for a slip to spend a night.

For the most part snowbirds use marinas in Norfolk area. Some popular are Tidewater, Ocean Marine Yacht Center, Waterside, Atlantic Yach Basin.

Norfolk is practically Portsmouth. Smith Point is the southern mouth of the Potomac River. My recommendation for a decent stop in between those points would be Deltaville, VA. We've stayed at Dozier's Regatta Point marine a couple of times now, most recently for three days last summer. It's easy to get into and has nice floating docks and a number of loaner cars to get to town - or you can bike in. Deltaville has a very large West Marine and a number of boatyards. If you are willing to head a bit out of your way and travel up the Rappahannock river several miles than the Tides Inn located at Irvington VA is highly recommended. It is very much a resort setting with the costs to match.

I've stayed at Windmill Point (at the mouth of the Rappahannock) and Salt Ponds (Hampton, VA). Both seemed to be decent facilities, with helpful/friendly staff (Salt Ponds staff was especially helpful when I had mechanical difficulties).

Windmill Point is very isolated, with a restaurant on site being the only "retail" facility. Good food, but ineptly managed (5 wait staff during lunch on a weekday when there were no more than 8 tables occupied at any time, 3 during a Saturday night live music performance that drew several hundred customers).

Salt Ponds is close to a public beach, has several pools (including the "party" pool off the bar), etc.

Nothing really outstanding about either facility overall, either positive or negative.

Urbanna town marina is a great option just up the river from windmill point and deltaville .
Clean facilities and friendly staff -and walk into town to a couple great restaraunts -try The Works for dinner and Something Different for breakfast or lunch in Urbanna

Very neat little town and all within walking distance .

Tides inn is also one of our favorites for special occasions -definitely a resort atmosphere with lots to do and a super restaraunt in the hotel .

Big crowds on weekends but not so much during week

Thanks for the responses. We ended up staying at Salt Ponds Marina. Nice marina good showers. Easy in and out. We got up early to get a start on the ICW.after 15 milez we found the lochs closed for repairs. Stuck for 4 hours. Record heat.

I just saw the notice of lock closures on the Albemarle Sound route the other day. The Dismal Swamp route is open and suggested as an alternate if you have to travel during the closures.
