I'm looking for some ideas for a week long cruise on the chesapeake. I would like to end up far enough south to do some fishing for things like drum, flounder, trout, cobia and others that don't get to the northern chesapeake ( I don't know how far south that is ). I am leaving from the maryland yacht club on the patapsco. I plan to hit spots like oxford and solomons. I've been to St. Michaels, Herrington Harbor N&S, Annapolis, and places on Kent Island. I'm hoping to have a dinghy for the trip so good anchorage spots with access to a dock bar or waterfront activities is an option as well. I plan to go through some cruising the bay books but any local knowledge would be appreciated. From different reviews I think I will skip the hotel in Cambridge. It is just 2 adults ( and maybe 1 dog ).

I hate to tell you about this one, but how about Onnancock, VA. Also depending on the time you should consider Crisfield MD and the Tides in Irvington, VA

Another vote for Bay Creek Marina in Cape Charles, VA. It's a long trip but a beautiful marina and restaurant (at least it was two years ago!) There's nothing in town to speak of beyond the Irish pub. If you're a golfer, bring your sticks - two great courses. Right now, Bay Creek Marina is offering a special - stay 2 nights and get 2 nights free - good anytime in 2009 but your reservations must be made by June 30. Tell them you got a post card in the mail!

Also, been to Onancock and it's a turn the clock back kind of town. From there, you can take the ferry to Tangier Island and appreciate the advancements made by Onancock!

Good luck!

So...

How did Onancock get its name? Wasn't Onan a biblical character that was struck down by God for masturbating?

Genesis 38:7-10 (English Standard Version)

7But Er, Judah’s firstborn,(A) was wicked in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD put him to death. 8Then Judah said to Onan, "Go in to(B) your brother’s wife and(C) perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother." 9But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his. So whenever he went in to his brother’s wife he would waste the semen on the ground, so as not to give offspring to his brother. 10And what he did was wicked in the sight of the LORD, and he put him to death also.

Do they have a statue in town?

Thanks for the input. This will help me put together a good trip in that part of the bay. This should be a good experience for me putting together a longer cruise.

Suggest Tilghman Island and Cambridge. (That's about as far south as we've gone on the bay.) A couple of nice marinas are on the canal at Tilghman. We've also stayed at the marina at the Hyatt in Cambridge. Nice place and you get the use of all the hotel facilities (pools, etc...) We've done some fishing off of poplar island and caught blues and rockfish.
