My boat was a repo and as such it did not have any manuals aboard. I have been able to download most of the componants' manuals but the ZF site did not have manuals for my trannys. My question is what are the proper conditions to check the tranny fluid. I know that some you check hot, some cold, some running in nuetral and some not running. Can any of you guys pin it down for me?
Thanks.

You can call Mercury Marine at buy the engine manuals. They will have transmission info too. Sorry, I don't have the tel number on me. You can do a Google search and find them.

On mine, you are supposed to run them for a while so there is tranny fluid in the heat exchanger (transmission oil cooler), then shut down, unscrew and pull the dip stick, wipe it clean, insert it back WITHOUT screwing it in, then pull it out and read.

Directly from my Mercruiser manual:
Fully warm up the transmissions by running the boat. Shut engine down and check oil levels IMMEDIATELY (Explanation in the manual: before the trans il coolers have a chance to drain back into the transmission). Check by unscrewing the dipstick, wiping it off and then ONLY inserting the dip stick, but not screwing it in.
These transmissions hold about 4 qts. of ATF each.

If you have the 8.1s engines go to this link which was posted as part of the manuals download "Sticky Thread. This is for the 496 CID which I have Page 8B6. I like their suggestion to mark for cold readings. Since you have the 310, I would suggest you look through the "Download manuals and information for your boat" thread

Look for the Mercruiser threads which end in numbers 28/28, 30/30 (Mine) 31/31 etc links. I am guessing the 31/31 link may have what you are looking for with your boat.

I would then suggest you do a "Save as," (Or click on the floppy icon)and save the document. I know I did and continue to do so with any manuals I am able to locate, afterwards I back these up to another location.

No link that I know of. If I make it to the boat today, I'll bring my manual back and try to scan it into the computer and post it here.

I do not know about posting it here, but if you can scan it in send me a PM please.
