Hi Fellow Great Lakers!

I wanted to throw a brief thread out here to share a little local knowledge with you for those planning your summer trips to Charlevoix. If you visited (or tried to visit) last summer (2021), then you know there is a new harbor master in CVX. While in the past, Hal and Pat would seemingly go through great hurdles to take care of everyone, things are a little more “by-the-book” with the new harbor master.

Now is the time (6 months before) to get on the DNR website and start making reservations. Plan to book for as long as you want to stay, as extensions were by and large a hassle for most last summer. Where previously you could let the office know you wanted to stay a few more days, now it is an 8am lineup at the door to extend for one day. And mostly only approved one day at a time. I saw several folks forced to move out even on the snottiest of days, and likely the incoming boat wouldn’t show up due the snotty weather. This left the slip you were forced out of to remain empty anyway overnight.

Another method I’ve heard from folks that want extended stays is to book the 7 night max in one name and email, and then use a spouse or other fake name to book the next 7 nights. Some people stay most of the summer by doing this.

We also noticed that many people are booking phantom reservations tying up slips that they don’t even intend to show up for. They can be canceled the day before arrival with only an $8 penalty.

I guess what I’m cautioning on here is no matter how long you want to stay, make sure you have reservations booked for that time, or have a plan B in mind if you are forced out. Charlevoix is a popular harbor, so planning ahead is your best bet to enjoy this great little town.

Hopefully I’ll see some of you on the docks this summer!

It has always been somewhat quirkie until you get the hang of how things work there. We always built in some flexibility by having easy to prepare meals on board, good books, and look forward to anchoring in one of the best anchorages around, Oyster Bay. Good place to hang out while slips get sorted.

I am getting married at Charlevoix Yacht Club this summer and have been making sure to have my friends book their slips ASAP.

I have gotten lucky by calling the marina on a whim the last two years and was able to snag a slip usually during the first week of August. I know its absolutely pure luck!

Thanks for the update Jeff. Too bad that Hal and Pat are not around because that was half the charm at your marina. We last visited Charlevoix and said hello to you in 2019 and since then Covid and a closed border have kept us on the Canadian side of Lake Huron. I've already made my three night reservation at your harbor for late June. Hope to see you then unless the border doesn't re-open to boaters. Jamie

@Jaws I remember you well! I figured I haven’t seen you due to border restrictions! Here’s to seeing you in June! We will be cruising last week of June/first of July, hopefully we don’t miss you! Safe travels!

I tried to make two reservations today on Erie one was June, one was august and they were sold out. The one in vermilion at the port authority for the fish festival was sold out since last summer.
It’s getting silly out there…

I just scheduled 2 nights in Leland and 2 nights on beaver island. Working on 2 nights in Charlevoix using an alternative method

Hey Jeff,
We have June 30th - July 3rd reserved in a 46’ slip, hope they aren’t going to be pricks about me hanging out a few feet, never had any issue before.
Trying to enjoy the cold weather down in Florida for the next few weeks:cool:!
