Charleston Rondevous Aug13

beach, depending on how close it is, you could fill fuel tank, water tank, poop tank (haha), and the bilges. We could all get aboard as ballast, with rocks in our pockets!

Ok, lets just hope you can make it!

Sadler, what about you? You have a arch. Heck, so do the 260's. Can we all fit under the bridge? Will the 270's and I, be the only ones at the lighthouse? It's ok, I'm calm.........we'll just have to go under at low tide!

I'm at 11'6" sitting at the dock, and that's just to the top of the radar. I will have to remove a few things first. To remove the radar is not an option.

As far as ballast, I recently added an extra water tank to the forward storage under the v berth bed. The total drop in height in the bow was under a half inch. The water tank holds close to a 1000lbs! It's going to take a bunch of you to squash it further into the water!!! It's a beamy monster!!

looking at the numbers I can make it during a low tide setting. I'm calculating how much time surrounding the low tide will be available to pass. This is just one of the factors in our process of making this work.

Yes, the bridge in question is listed as 10' MHT. With the tide data for that day, the highest person at low tide that can fit should be around 15' high from the waterline.

I'm sure you will all be able to fit, just don't forget lowering your VHF's...

Good news beachcomber. I can't imagine taking the radar dome off though. Whew, now I can get my panties out of a wad! haha

Chris wish you could have made it to! There will be another trip I'm sure. I plan to NOT get into any trouble this time! haha
I can't speak for Tracy though. Ooo, is he coming? I'll have to look.

Can't make this one Mike, already commited to doing the Poker Run here on Wateree. I know ya'll will have a blast and hate to miss it especially since there won't be any golf carts this time!

Beachcomber, you should definitely make the call here, but my experience is that getting to the lighthouse at low tide is very tough even with my boat. I have to trim the drive all the way up and even then I kick the mud up. If you have to wait for low tide to get under the bridge, I don't think you'd have enough water to make it to the lighthouse unless you stopped and waited for a couple of hours beyond the bridge.

What is your draft? When is the last time you traveled up that way?

I draw less when on plane!!!!!

You can't go through there on plane it would be too fast. It is very windy & curvy and there are oyster beds on both sides. One false move and you would be in trouble. YOu will need to idle through! The last time I went through there I was following Sadler and got off his path by a few feet and hit bottom.

The last time I went up the back way to the lighthouse was 3-4 weeks ago. Both Jerry's 270 and my 290 were churning mud that day at the shallowest spot and we both had our outdrives tilted all the way up (not trailered) and it was about 30 min beyond low tide. My boat draws about 24" with the drive up and 44" with it all the way down.

It was a joke ;-)

What's your plan for the overnighting on the hook? Do you all set anchor alone?

We usually all raft up together, but with this many boats and with the strong current near the lighthouse inlet, we'll probably break apart and raft up in twos and threes before bed.

Ugh, I didn't think about low tide and shallow draft. There really is no free lunch! haha
Beach your killing me, go thru on plane, you sound like me. You didn't used to be a fighter pilot or something like that were you?

As far as anchoring, I'll bring my dingy, and Sadler will have his, so we can drop anchors all over the place! The worst that could happen is we all end up on the........I better not say it! haha

Tracy, sorry you can't make it, we'll miss ya. As far as golf carts go, I still am shocked by that whole situation. I never want to hear that sound again. I hope she is back to normal.

This trip sounds like a blast! Sorry I can't make it this time.....we were just there 2 weeks ago. Have you guys considered overnighting in the little inlet behind Morris Island? The one near Cummings Point? I saw many boats tied up there on our trip...but not sure you can see the light house that well....

Kendall, sorry you can't make it. Hope you can make a future gathering. I think the "romantic" view of the lighthouse would not be as good at Cummings Point, but it would certainly be easier to get to. We should try it sometime. I don't know if that spot would be susceptible to the wakes of the passing boats or not though. Freighters come in and out of Charleston harbor all night. Do you recall what it was like when you were there? Where were you? See map below:

Sadler:

We were just off of the Northern most point of Morris Island (see attached). We were beached up on shore at low tide which was rising. As the current came in I had to back the boat off of the beach as the current was trying to turn the boat sideways...strong through there. I noticed several boats up in behind Morris Island where I have noted on your attached map. These were large boats (40' trawler type)....mucho draft. The point was pretty wild depth wise....in the photo I attached you can see the 260 in beached on the bow but the stern is in 4'+ water! Drops off fast there.

I would recommend you try going in the inlet behind Morris where noted and see if you can see the light house well.

Sounds like a great time. We had a great time searching for wrecks outside the jetties with my charts and standard Sea Ray depth finder....found several of them before the winds picked up.

All these years and I've never been there. I will definitely give it a try. I'm not sure it'll be good for an overnighter though. Looking at the enlarged map below, it looks like the area you marked--probably the area with sufficient depth--is pretty small. Maybe not big enough for a group of boats rafted up that will need to swing with the tide change. However, charts can be deceiving. I'll head over one day and see for myself. It certainly is very close to the harbor. I've never used my sounder to look for wrecks. That's another thing I'll have to put on my "to do" list. Thanks.
