Charleston Rendezvous Huge Success

That is the trip that Gerald went diving, I missed that one.

Just looking at some of the pictures from this time last year. What a great trip!

OK. How 'bout this weekend :) I'm ready.

Sadler, how is your boat search coming along?

We should set a date for another Rendezvous and see if we get anyone. How about around the same time as last year?

As for my boat search, after much looking and lot of help from Frank W, I was preparing an offer on a 2002 410 diesel in Ft. Myers listed by MM, when my daughter, who is graduating from UNC, got accepted to Duke Law school. She needed some help with the tuition (which is eye popping), so with a little encouragement from the Admiral, I decided to use a big chunk of the boat money to help out, effectively ending my boat search.

Maybe next year. :smt089

Meantime, I've been using and enjoying Hey Babe. Some friends and I took her up the ICW on a 464 mile 8 day trip starting in late March. The four of us stayed on the boat the whole time, combining anchoring out with a few days in the Bald Head Marina in NC. We got as far as Wrightsville Beach, NC. The folks who came with me were real gourmet cooks, and brought two ice chests of food. We grilled salmon, steak, chicken, had desserts, mashed potatoes, etc, full breakfasts--again all on board. It was my best boat trip by far. In addition to the ICW, we took the boat far up the Waccamaw and the PeeDee and Black River. One of the guys knows this part of the ICW extremely well, and he took us to some very beautiful and private anchorages. Only one technical problem the entire trip--a loose nut on the wiring harness that instantly shut all power off and killed the engine. Found it in a few minutes, and with a 13mm socket, got her tight, and we were back up running. Photos of the trip are here:

Sadler thanks for posting the links to your trip. You have to start a new thread and give us all the details. Did you keep your garmin track?

Chuck,

Will do on starting a new thread.

I did keep a track on the Garmin of the trip. Unfortunately, my Garmin is on the boat in Charleston. I'm going back on April 23. I'll retrieve the track then and send to you.

I live in Charleston, We have had some major changes happen near the inlets north of the harbor up the ICW. I was returning from a weekend hook and encountered 3 foot deep flats where it was clearly listed over 12 feet. Crab pots were standing out of the water. I know we had a low low tide, but the numbers have changed big time in many areas... Please be careful, dont assume its the same as last season... Hope to meet anyone who stops in!!!!

What a great thread! It brings back so many memories. I am in the AF and the admiral is from Charleston. We now live in Anchorage, AK and love it but I do miss boating and the south.

Our typical weekend consisted of putting in on the saltwater side of Bushy Park just upriver from the Naval Weapons Station. We would then head down to the Ravenel Bridge turn around and then head back up the river all the way to Tail Race Canal. Stop for a quick bite to eat at Gilligans (aka the old Dock Resteraunt). After filling our stomachs with some great She-Crab soup and hush puppies we went up through the locks and on to lake Moultrie. Quick cruise over to Short Stay Naval Recreation area were some of the admirals family had their RV for the summer. They would pick us up in the golf cart and we would hang out with them for a while. If we had too many frosty beverages we would stay with them for the evening. Then back down the locks down river into the freshwater side of Bushy park (to make cleaning the boat a little easier after being in the salt) and back to the landing.

Sorry I made this so long just reminissing (spelling?).

BTW between tail race canal and the NWS pay real close attention to the channel markers cuz it gets shallow real quick. Almost learned this the hard way first time out. Good thing the depth sounder has an alarm and we weren't going very fast.

Adam,

Thank you for your service and thanks for bringing this thread up again. The Cooper River trip is a great run. I'm trying to figure out how to do it again before the kids go back in school.

SeaRide,
Thanks! I have footitis however i know my roots as owning a small bow rider. When! I get my new boat. Probably years from now I would like to name her "Plane to Sea". As you can see by my screen name. I am a Load master on C17's who has a wife that doesn't like to fly but loves boating and so do I. So guess what we will do.

If anyone has any questions about chs i will try to answer them.
