Hey Guys,
Merc 260, I went to try to take the nut off where the steel gas line connects to the carb to change the filter in there (or see if there was one there and put one in if not) but couldn't get that nut to thread out. It would turn a little but didn't start to thread out of the carb body at all. Is there a trick to getting this nut off? Do you have to first disconnect the gas line that threads into the other side of the nut? Need a special wrench?

Assuming I get it out and in should I put some teflon tape on it when it goes back on?

Appreciate the help.
Thanks,
Billy

you need to use a flare wrench this will not cause the metal gas line to collape under pressure. Aslo remove the gas line nut first like you mentioned, (flare wrench again) this will help. what kind of card do you have? holly or rochester single or double feed. Some of the internal filter are a porous brass and other are a paper type. good luck go slow turn off battery, diconnect coil wire, put a rag under the nut on top of the intake gas will leak out, watch for fumes... safty first!!!

Use the type of teflon tape specifically intended for use with gasoline. Leave the first three threads bare, then begin to wrap normally.

Thanks for the help guys, its a rochester single feed. I got a little filter from advance auto parts although I guess I wont know if its the right one until I take the old one out. It has brass fittings on each end and there is paper in the middle. Anyone happen to know what size flare wrenches I should buy for the two nuts? The boat is two hours away.
Thanks
Billy

I can't remember what size the fuel line nut is at the carb, but if you aren't going today I can check mine when I get home and let you know. I have a Rochester Q-Jet on mine.

For the filter retaining nut, you don't need a flare wrench for that one since you'll have the fuel line disconnected. You can just use a box wrench for that one. One thing you don't want to do is use an open end wrench as you'll strip the nut.

I'll check the size of both the fuel line flair nut and the filter retainer nut after work and post back with the info.

5/8 tubing wrench for the fuel line and a one inch combination wrench will work for rhe filter housing
thats what my Q-jet takes any way

Thanks man I would appreciate that!

5/8" for the nut and 1" for the filter nut. However, DON'T use any Teflon Tape! No need since it's a flare tubing fitting. I would recommend teflon paste or antiseize on the threads only. . Lowers the chance of contamination. Also, the sintered bronze stone has a replacement possiblity with a small paper filter.
