Thought about raising my stripes to allow bottom paint to be raised up side a little further .Seems like my bottom stripe is always in water. I guess without a full sand and new gel coat. Those old burned in lines from years of old vinyl. No way of hiding? As any body changed stripes and did nothing with gel coat? How does it look? Thanks

I did the exact same thing this year. It went well. I sanded to gel coat, raised the bottom paint line by roughly 3", and put new bootstripe. It came out great! A quick wetsand with 800 grit paper and a compound with buff magic takes the lines away, depending on how pronounced they are.

We just paid to have ours removed and redone, looks really good and is now above the water line more.

It's so much "burned" as it is lack of fading. Underneath the stripe, the gel will still be the original color. Also, you will probably find that the area underneath the stripe is slightly "higher" than the surrounding area. This is from years and years of buffing/compounding, etc - the area under the stripe did not receive any "sanding" so it is still the original thickness. A good buffing can at least get the surrounding gelcoat back to approximately the original color. But without sanding the "ridge", you'll still see that. More noticeable on your boat than the other guys since their boat is newer, but it won't be too bad.
