Hey everybody, it is about time to change my water pumps out on my OMC Cobra outdrives. Some people say the complete outdrive must be taken off to do this..Is that true? or can you just drop the lower unit? I have done some searches, and there is not a lot of info on this...I was going to change my bellows anyway since they are about 5 years old. How big of an undertaking is this going to be? I have changed out the impeller on a newer outdrive before with no problem..

No !!, They are talking out of their a$$es on that :smt021. It can be done in less than 20min's tops !!. :smt001

6 nuts and 2 trim ram bolts and its off of there. :smt001

The drive DOES NOT get removed to change the impeller. 3 bolts on the "sweeping" part of the outdrive give you access to the pump housing. 4 nuts hold the housing on remove those to access the impeller. If everything comes apart ok, it is literally a 10 minute job. One thing about Cobras, they have the most accesible raw water pump.
To do the bellows you do have to remove the drive. Like Wayne said, remove the trim ram pivot pin and the six nuts holding it to the transom shield, and pull the drive off. Be carefull, it is a bit heavy and akward to handle. You'll be looking at the bellows after you remove the drive. Not a hard job, like I said, just akward to handle the outdrive.
