Changed oil today, now have zero oil pressure

how do you get the filter on fast enough not to leak oil everywhere with and upside down filter? just curious.

My oil filters are also mouted with the open end down. The secret is to use the proper filter from Merc or Quicksilver. The Merc is #35-866340K01; the Quicksilver is #35-866340Q03.

Both of these filters have a check valve in them that prevents the oil from draining down and out of them unless more oil is pushed into them under pressure. This way, the filters stay full of oil at all times. When removing, just crack the seal and wait a minute or so for any oil between the filter face and the housing to drain back into the engine. You should then be able to slowly unscrew the filter, remove, and tip it upright without spilling a drop. The filter will be heavier than your new one since it still contains oil that is trapped within it.

The last owner of my boat used car type FRAM filters - man what a mess removing them!:smt013 Since using the right filters I haven't spilled a drop!

OOPS - missread the question...:smt101 My bad.

I don't think it is possible to fill these filters with oil before installing them, check-valve or not, it would be a big mess!

Jim, you are correct when you "crack" the seal on the oil filter but I have found it a bit easier to poke a small hole in the top of the filter and that will release the oil back into the engine and after a couple of mins, twist it off. There should be no oil running down the sides of the filter base. I do keep a couple of paper towels underneath just in case.

Hi everyone -

Good news... it was the flux capacitor!!!

Seriously though, I put the old filter one and had oil pressure within 5 seconds of the motor running. Not sure what is wrong with my new filter, but it is obviously a bad unit. Will be returning it and getting another new filter.

Thanks to everyone for giving the useful suggestions. I didn't intend on starting a sh!t storm, but I guess it will happen from time to time.

For what it's worth, I've been listening to Frank's advice for years now, and he's never steered me wrong. In fact, he gave me advice when I bought this boat 6 years ago on an old (and now defunct) Sea Ray Owners forum and I do believe that he knows what the heck he's talking about. I do appreciate the rest of the comments as well, though I'm glad that I didn't listen to some of them. :smt043

DO NOT LET GO OF THAT FILTER!!! It is your ticket to possible engine repairs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have no idea if you may have damaged your engine, but, that filter and this thread may be all you need to get a rebuild if you start burning oil.

Looking at a pressure gauge to diagnose this is almost useless because the gauge won't show pressure until there is resistance in the oil system. I would remove the coil wire from the distributor so the engine won't fire and then take the new oil filter off. Next crank the engine until you either see oil coming out of the remote filter bracket, or confirm that there is no oil flow and go from there.

I'm betting you do have oil flow which means you have a filter problem.

I'm a big fan of not over complicating boat repairs. Since the engine ran fine warming it up to change the oil, I'm thinking the problem is something filter related.....wrong filter, bad filter, etc. And, yes Virginia, there are bad filters. I've had more than one from Fram, Purolator, Delco and Motorcraft. They either wouldn't hold pressure (bad check valve) or wouldn't pass oil, like this post (bad by pass valve).

Good luck..........

Lucky Guess?

I guess that will silence the crowd!

45 years of experience will get you a high percentage of lucky guesses every time. (Sorry, you're probably not THAT old, but I had to beat 40 years.)

Actually, they are both very well versed in their areas of expertise. I have consulted with Frank many, many times and have always received extremely helpful advice.

This is a forum. People come here to chat. Chatting isn't always 100% perfect advice. If you enjoy it and/or benefit from it, join in. If not, find a place that does suit your needs.

By the way, of all of the experts to pick on, you have picked the most inappropriate ones.

Agree!!. The most inappropriate ones to pick on.....

I just hate it when someone ruins a thread by badmouthing another contributor. If you disagree, fine, post why and allow time for a response. The main reason I am here is to learn. One can even learn from inacurate posts, especially when they are corrected with better, more sound advice.

I learned a few things from this thread. So thank you to all that posted in the spirit of helping others.

I was supporting him! Otherwise I wouldn't have pointed it out!

What I highlighted shows he was dead on without even looking at the engine.

I was trying to add to your point, not contradict it. The magic of the internet.

^^^^ +2 on that reply.

Like I posted before, Go back to where the issue started and work forward. So what if an anolog guage was used? It still would have not shown the problem. That could only be done be proccess of elimination starting with the filter and hoses.

Can anyone tell me why it was bad advice to manualy prime the engine when no oil PSI appears to be present?

Agree or disagree with a post but leave the personal attacks and name calling to the third graders.

I agree that manually priming the engine would have been the BEST way to start, but I didn't have a way to do it, and trying the old oil filter was much easier and faster. I'm glad that it worked out, and will definitely be holding on to the old filter. I will contact Mercruiser about this issue with hopes of finding out just what the issue was. I'll let you know if I find anything out...............

Glad to hear you found the problem. I never knew that something as simple as a filter could be bad out of the box. I will file that bit of knowledge. Thanks to all that contribute on this site. I have saved hundreds of dollars over the last few years based on information that was given on this forum. For those who can't express themselves without personally attacking other members should find a new boating forum.
