Changed oil today, now have zero oil pressure

Looking at a pressure gauge to diagnose this is almost useless because the gauge won't show pressure until there is resistance in the oil system. I would remove the coil wire from the distributor so the engine won't fire and then take the new oil filter off. Next crank the engine until you either see oil coming out of the remote filter bracket, or confirm that there is no oil flow and go from there.

I'm betting you do have oil flow which means you have a filter problem.

I'm a big fan of not over complicating boat repairs. Since the engine ran fine warming it up to change the oil, I'm thinking the problem is something filter related.....wrong filter, bad filter, etc. And, yes Virginia, there are bad filters. I've had more than one from Fram, Purolator, Delco and Motorcraft. They either wouldn't hold pressure (bad check valve) or wouldn't pass oil, like this post (bad by pass valve).

Good luck..........

I would do exactly as Frank described. Disable the ignition and remove the filter but if you're concerned about cranking the engine with no oil pressure I would consider removing the spark plugs to reduce the friction on the bearings. Especially if you end up cranking the engine alot to track down the problem. I know it's a scary thing to see no oil pressure. Sends chills up my spine. Good luck, Mark

If oil is flowing down both hoses to and from the engine then the filter must be the issue. Oil flows from the outside of the filter into the center. Remember when you fill a filter you are filling the suction side of the filter which means you are putting unfiltered oil into the engine. Same with fuel lfilters. If dirt enters the center of the filters , fuel or oil, it will go to through the engine/injectors/carb.

Here's a quick reference on how the filter works. http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/297.cfm

I like the idea of getting a new filter over the idea of putting the old one back on - but, go to a different source if you can - may be a bad lot.

Frank Webster suggestion is the way to go (spinning the engine without starting it to see if it builds oil pressure).

However, rather than pulling the coil wire I suggest you pull the fuel pump fuse instead.........that's assuming your engine is fuel injected. (I have blown an ECM on one of my cars by pulling the coil wire in a similar method). This way the fuel system will not get pressurized and the engine won't get fuel to start.

flarepoman's comment puzzles me........... his total contribution toward a solution is "buy or borrow a cheap gauge". I'm thinking Texas probably does need to listen to a different genius.

Maybe so but all these so called technical contributors have no merit whatsoever:smt101

Frank, I'm with you. Flarepoman jumps in to rudely trash a reasonable suggestion from another member, makes a less reasonable suggestion himself which will not solve the problem, and only confirm what is already known. Then when his idea is politely challenged, he trashes all the Technical Contributors.

Every body listen to Frank. He is the main geniuse along with keokie:smt038

Actually, they are both very well versed in their areas of expertise. I have consulted with Frank many, many times and have always received extremely helpful advice.

This is a forum. People come here to chat. Chatting isn't always 100% perfect advice. If you enjoy it and/or benefit from it, join in. If not, find a place that does suit your needs.

By the way, of all of the experts to pick on, you have picked the most inappropriate ones.

Well John then we are in agreement

Heres a Christmas gift for all the tech people that are here.
I am not one. only 40 years on engines. No tech here

Forgot the Merry Christmas

I am thinking your transmission was garbled, must have been sun spots or something....:smt101

I'm just sitting here, eating my popcorn, and watching flarepoman commit forum suicide.

flarepoman, seriously, your suggestion was to go get an analog gauge? Did you even read the OP's entire post before your replied? With no oil in the oil filter he clearly has no oil pressure and an analog gauge wouldn't change what he already knew. Honestly, I laughed out loud at the idiocy of your suggestion and was going to keep my opinion to myself. You changed that with your continued personal attacks on the very people who have given literally hundreds of hours of outstanding technical advice and probably saved hundreds of people many thousands of dollars.

Dude, its not my boat. I'm not going to fix it, but I did make a reasonable effort to help the owner diagnose and fix what is wrong. You, on the other hand, are content to sit back and throw rocks at everyone else's efforts to help out with a useless suggestion that will only confirm a fact the owner already knows.

Its also probably a good thing that you have 40 years experience working on engines because you are not likely to get a lot of help here with your forum manners.
