Champagne problems

If only someone would invent a gauge that tells you when approaching shallow water. Possibly with an alarm.
But I guess we are decades away from that technology.
Possibly put someone on the bow with a lead weight on a string; but alas, I am dreaming of future technology.
Or a device that you could deploy that would stop you from drifting any further inland. A shark tank proposal perhaps?

Beautiful boat, I can already see the lawyers teeing up

Captain did the right thing. Beaching it on sand will cause minimal damage. Yes....the running gear took a beating but no where near what the rocks south of there would have done. Surprised that the tow boats couldn't get it out of there before he beached it. There must have been some serious weather at work.

They will have to hire a tug boat with the proper equipment. Some lift bags on the stern and they are in business.

Just noted that the previous post that says they got it off the beach without incident. I don't get that both engines "locked up" but the media is not known for their boat knowledge.

What a bummer. Pretty wicked surf to deal with.

I was talking to someone who knows about that boat and what happened. It appears from what he said is the fire system discharged and shut down all of the engines and generators and set the boat adrift. The report was the captain couldn't get the engines restarted. The question I have is - why didn't the captain bypass the system? Maybe the fire systems on those big boats are more complex than simply bypassing like in the smaller boats.

Great question @ttmott It was asked why he didn’t drop anchor. I’m assuming that it’s because his generator was down? One would think that would need to be bypassed as well for emergency purposes?

Yea - those are big anchor systems - most hydraulically operated and require AC power. However regardless there must be a release to drop the thing per ABYC.

That had to be an "Awwww Shit" moment. If he was by himself......that is a feeling of helplessness and doom.

I'm not sure what the fire systems do on the large boats. Assuming that everything is electronically shut everything down.....I would presume the reset is in the ER someplace. More importantly is why did it trip in the first place. That is not something you hear about on a regular basis.

As to the anchor......on large boats there generally is an manual emergency release located near the capstan. Most are also electrically actuated from the helm and do not require a generator to release it. As to why he didn't drop it....he is the only one that would know.

I also got the impression he did get at least one of the engines going which was how he was able to drive it onto the beach bow first.

With no bow rails and reported 8'-10' seas, I don't think anyone was brave (crazy) enough to try and manually release the anchor.

I would think if he got an engine running he would have kept it off of the beach, unless he was sinking and to your point dropped the anchor to keep him off of it.

I heard the VHF calls and rightfully so the captain was shi*ting his pants. He was practically begging a 55 Valhalla in the area to help but that guy said he wasn't risking his boat in the shallows.
