Hi I am new to the sea ray club
Just purchased a 05 300SD. I read people change the rope to chain to help with planing
How long and size chain. What is the oem length of chain/rope set up.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to CSR!

It's all going to depend on what windlass you have. My Lofrans Progress 1 windlass takes G4 - 5/16' chain. There should be a stamp on the gypsy that tells you which size.

Ok thanks I'l check it out. Does that tell you the length to

Your parts manual will list the standard anchor and rode that came with the boat, or perhaps two options, so that will give you a start. For my 340DA, the "standard" option was 25lb plow XT anchor, 25' 5/16" HT chain and 200' 5/8" nylon 3 strand. There was also an all chain option, 125' 5/16" HT chain.

Fyi - it looks like your boat had similar options, this is from the 300DA parts manual for 2005:
ANCHOR, 25LB PLOW
ANCHOR SHACKLE, JAW/JAW SWIVEL HVY DTY 3/8"
CHAIN, HIGH TEST 5/16"X 125'
(WINDLASS - LOFRANS - CHAIN)
ROPE/CHN KT, LOFRANS 5/8"X 200'/5/16"X 25'RV1
(WINDLASS - LOFRANS - ROPE / CHAIN)
CHAIN STOP, SS W/LANYARD (WINDLINE)
(WINDLASS - LOFRANS - CHAIN)

Hope that helps! Cheers.

Looked it up last night and seen that.
Going all chain is less ft. Then chain/rope. It must be a room issue? This is my first boat with windlass
I will see how the boat performs on plan and speed
And see if I need the extra weight.
Thanks for replies and help guys. So looking forward to getting her in the water

I just went to 150 ft of chain and 125 rode in my 460. I have the progress 1 windlass and it performs great. I did go to a mega raid for the rope verses 3 strand and the windlass holds it perfect without any slippage. Had west marine price match it all and I’m happy as a lark.

Make sure you get the exact right chain. It’s not Home Depot stuff. The link sizes are different and Home Depot chain will not fit the gypsy and will wear it out faster. G4 is a shorter link chain. The windlass mfg should be able to tell you what to get.

Thanks for the input. Once it is in the water I will be driving it the first time so I will see if it needs the extra weight in the front to plan quicker.
