Looking to purchase a Sea Ray with CAT C12 engines. What is the general thoughts about these engine? I know that Caterpillar had some issues with the 3196, and the C12 is the updated version of the 3196.

have a buddy 98 500DA repowered in early 2000s with C12 Acerts. Its a rocket, cruises very high 20's, and has all the electronic goodies into his dash

I will say this, as a commercial truck owner at the time. Cat quit building over the road engines due to the acert motors. they could never overcome the federal regs and build a reliable motor.
maybe this dosen't apply to marine engines, I am not a expert but had bad experiences with their heavy trk motors.

that raises a good point, I wonder if the marine engines were subject to the same emission regs, whatever cats version of the EGR was, DPF, etc.? Maybe they were able to put less of that tech in the off-road/marine versions?

I’m headed to look at a boat on Sunday with the C12’s, so I’m trying to read everything I can.

I have no idea, but I can say the on road motors was prone to problems. Got rid of them ASAP.
