A couple of weeks ago, when I replaced my raw water impellars, I noticed that the shaft on my starboard pump had some play in it. I think I should replace the pump.

Where is a good place to get the pump, and what should I expect to pay for one? I think the part number (CAT's part number) is 113-1109.

Also, any issues to be aware of during the swap? I figure that buying a new pump (although expensive) is a better idea than rebuilding the existing pump? Should I consider trying to find someone to rebuild my pump? I am not comfortable rebuilding it myself.

Caterpillar uses a Sherwood as their OEM vendor for sea water pumps. I think the Sherwood pump you need is going to be a 1710X, but verify that before you order.

Here is a list of Sherwood distributors:

http://www.sherwoodpumpsdistribution.com/en-us/DistributorLocator/

My last Sherwood was about $730....from Cat it will be 2X that.

What to avoid....you found one thing to avoid...loose shaft. The pump is going to leak very soon, so go ahead and replace it now. In fact, they have the same time and use on them so I'd replace them both at the same time. The pump is gear driven off an accessory drive in the timing cover and the pump gear will have to be pressed off the tapered shaft to change it. Other than physically getting to the stbd one, the rest is just nuts and bolts, so go for it.

While I was buying engine zincs at Ring Power last week I thought it would be a good idea to get replacement impellers. Pulled up the engines by S/N and said the motors did not include raw water pumps when they left the factory. Weird, huh? Why would they ship a marine diesel w/out a raw water pump? Apparently their record keeping isn't perfect, because the gear oil coolers that "should" have been on my engines were a different type that have no zincs...

Fortunately the prior owner had CAT service the boat just before I bought it less than two years ago and I found the receipt with the impeller P/N's.

Caterpillar engines have 2 numbers on them..a serial number and an arrangement number. If you find the arrangement number and go back to Ring power, I bet they can find the part numbers for everything you need.

A Caterpillar distributor in Florida, Ringhaver Power Systems, (I believe it is owned by the same people who own Ring Power) marinized the base Cat engines by adding the marine stuff like heat exchangers, sea water pumps, transmission coolers, etc. but all that was specified by Caterpillar. This might be a case where the local guys just didn't have the various parts lists for the different arrangements.

I bought a remanufactured pump from CAT. Same warranty as a new pump, and the tech told me that they have not had any problems with them.

Price was $296 (including a new impellar).

Frank, this seems like a bargain?

A new pump from CAT was $515.

Shoot... new water pumps for my QSM11's (albeit they are 1800 and not 1700 size) were over $1K each... and that's from a discount pump place. Cummins probably would want over $2K each.

You missing a decimal point?

Ok, SEARAYCRUISN-Eric, where did you get them for that price ??
The CAT place here in Seattle wants $500....
Thanks.......

New pumps are $514. I bought the remanufactured one $296 (plus shipping). They also charge a $200 core charge if you do not turn in your old pump.

The pump does not come painted....so for you must have white guys, you will need to paint the pump. It comes unfiished in its original brass color.

Dealer is H.O. Penn (860)666-8401.

I'm no expert in these Sherwood 1700 series pumps but on the side I have seen some discussion of them. You may want to check out:

These guys have a direct replacement pump that they say is of better quality. I'm not endorsing it but just pointing it out...

I received the pump in the mail on Saturday. The only thing in the box was the pump housing itself, and the impellar installed in the pump.

Am I going to need some gaskets in between the pump and the flange that the water hoses attach to?

Called the CAT dealer and determined that I needed a gasket for where the pump enters the flywheel housing, as well as two O rings for connecting the hose flanges to the pump.

However, when we installed the pump, and ran the engine....oil leaked out from the flywheel housing where the pump is installed. We thought we had put the gasket in incorrectly, but that was not it.

Turns out that the pump was assembled incorrectly. The pump was connected up side down to the mounting bracket! I can't believe it. What a mess... And then, it took time to figure out that the problem was actually with the pump assembly.

I shamed the CAT dealer into crediting me for the cost of the pump for my troubles. I had to take the pump to a local marina and have them disassemble the pump from the mounting bracket, and turn the bracket around.

You don't say... and this is a "CAT" engine?

One of the tricks the Cummins guys use is to glob some 5200 on it...

Eric,
CAT had a problem a few short years ago with subcontractor components which were, tragically, built by the French in a small barn/factory/wine press in Sedan. Apparently, Gastogne, the proprietor, thought that melting down French Army rifles which had been thrown down by French infantrymen as their hands shot skyward in the face of oncoming German tanks in 1940 would be a really good way to recycle old iron and steel, in an earth friendly, Obama-esque sort of way.
Gastogne made valves for CAT engines, Sherwood water pumps, Onan generator fuel actuators, and Cummins QSM 11 assembly fasteners using this method. Sadly, the CAT valves proved to be no firmer than the French defenders of the Maginot line; the water pumps were prone to leak like the defense around Paris, and as for the Onan actuators and Cummins bolts, well, those of us with a few hours experience in the ER just replace the darned things with parts made here in the land of the free and the home of the brave. I would opt for the Sherwood pump replacements sold at boatdiesel.com, as Gary has done. And I have a friend in New Joysey who can hook you up with a CAT battle flag to reward your brand loyalty.

You should see the new CAT emblems, hats and throw rugs I bought.......

I too had CAT remanufactured pumps put on my 3126s directly from RIng Power in Tampa and they cost was $296.53 for the OR-7906. They said they are as good as the new ones and have the same warranty.
