Cat 3116 intermittent shutdown

Exactly same problem !!! Pulled the old Bosch one out and took it O'Reilly's Auto and got 2 @ $6 a piece.... Problem Solved !!! And if you want to waste $ you can go your CAT dealer an spend $25 a piece for the same part. I wasted $$ replacing both fuel solenoids and God knows what else, but this $6 part as solved it..

I had the same problem. It was the relay that powers the fuel shutoff solenoid. It is located in the breaker box that sits on the engine above the transmission in my 99 400DA. Yours might be similar. Very easy to replace. I replaced them on both engines and bought a spare. If I remember correctly it was a Bosch relay that was discontinued but I was able to cross reference it to a tyco part.

Good luck

Pete, I the the same on board too, but please tell me you have inline fuse in your setup.....

The great thing about the 3116 is that the only electrical input required to operate the engine is the 12V supply to the Fuel Solenoid. I know of a few people (me included) that keep a wire with a battery clip on one end and an alligator clip (or push on terminal for screws) on the other that is long enough to reach from the battery to the solenoid. In the event that the circuit fails, this jumper wire can get you back up and running in minutes. You just need to know which terminal on the solenoid gets the 12V and which is ground, lest sparks fly.

The 97 and earlier uses a starter type relay (more robust) than the relay box on the newer versions.

I think the Bosch type relay may have an internal fuse in it. I helped one of the Atlantic City visitors get his boat going when his relay stuck open and I believe you can see a fusible link in the circuitry printed on the side of the relay body. It is a cheap part so if the contacts stick, it would be reasonable to include internal circuit protection rather than put down-stream components at risk when the relay fails.

Does anyone have a part no....? Here in NZ they just look at you like you have 3 heads if you ask for anything without a part no. Too tired to cross reference I guess.
