We live in Michigan, so we have some hot days in the summer, but probably not enought to justify the cost of an installed A/C unit. Do any of you have any experience with the carry on A/C units?

I relaize it will only run when on shore power, but that is ok with us. We want it mainly for a good nights sleep while at the dock.

Thanks,
Ryan

Not really an answer to your question, but it brings to light an idea I had.....

...A regular A/C uses a lot of power and isn't appropriate for overnighting on batteries. The water is very cool 6-8' below the surface. What about building a system that pumped water from the first 'thermocline' into a small radiator-fan combination in the cabin, and then back out over the side? A few hoses through the vent, a DC power adapter plug for the pump and the fan. Whatcha think? If I could find a little 4" x 4" radiator-like device, I'd build one to try out.

Hi Ryan,

I know people that use them. They work well. The unit is made so the controls are accessible from inside the boat. Even on a hot night the units are able to get the cabin down right chilly.

The issue is convenience and storage when not in use. If you have a dock box you may want to measure the inside and see if you can find a unit that will fit on the box. Hauling it back and forth from the vehicle would be a lot of work on a hot day.

You need to take them off when you are boating.

I used a cruisair 5000 carry-on on my last boat which was a 2004 260 sundancer - it cooled the cabin down with ease.

I use mine everytime there's need for it. Works great. With out it we would loose number of great weekends.

Alex.
