My 97 S Ray aft cabin's carpet: cabin, bridge, and aft deck, is looking shabby and it is time to replace.

I don't want to do carpet again and am interested in vinyl planking or some kind of equivilent.

Has anyone used vinyl/something else.......or.......does anyone have a boat that came with OEM vinyl/something else flooring?

Would be grateful for any thoughts on flooring options.

Do you think vinyl flooring would be slippery? I do see it used on newer models at the boat shows.

    Many thanks for your ideas.

I'm really a carpet guy and I have never installed the vinyl planks in a boat. However, I did install 400 sq. ft. of the stuff in my game room. I bought mine at Home Depot. I was going to put the ceramic tile planks down but I would have needed to float the floor level. The vinyl does not need an even surface, is a floating floor (no adhesive needed but I think I would in the boat), was really easy to install and its waterproof. We've had a dozen parties and spilled everything from tequila to red wine on it and not a mark. My dogs walked and ran on it with their claws....nothing.

The best thing is so many people are surprised that it is not wood. We really like it. Installation snaps and interlocks together and it's thin....like an 1/8" or so. I would not hesitate to put this stuff in any boat. Check it out at HD. there are about 10 different flavors.

I used this in my 340 cabin. Very happy with finished results. I had to do quite a bit of leveling first.

That looks incredibly sharp, how did you affix it, do the joints between planks, and deal with the curves?

    Very, very nice looking.

Its glued down (below is the manufacture) For the steps I did doubled up 3/4" MDF with the vinyl glued on then finish routed with a template. JJ Chones has a video on his install of this material on here somewhere .

image.jpeg image.jpeg I used a vinyl plank from lumber liquidator. The wear layer was thicker than the products at the box stores. The color doesn't show well in the picture. The stuff is great. IMO carpet has no place on small boats. Get it wet dirty sandy, no problem. I wouldn't hesitate to do it if I were you. Yes the sub floor is rough from the factory. You can sand and fill it, but it makes a mess. I screwed a second subfloor of 3/8 marine plywood over it.

I've done 3 boats and a 3500 sq foot house with Allure from Home Depot.
Here's my 370 Sundancer. Search for my posts and you'll find more. buck a square foot, doesn't need gluing, and easy to remove and repair a plank if ever needed. The trim is a stainable flextrim with a wood grain molded into it.
Hatch trim is by Johnny Corners. Easy stuff.

The Allure looks great. I used it on my 290 DA.
Also consider Infinity, I put it in my current boat. Very easy to work with.

Vinyl planks that have a very aggressive adhesive and stick together. Water proof. Home Depot sells it.

would it be possible to install the Allure vinyl planks on top of 1/4" or 1/2" plywood that was laid on top of the OEM carpet in a cruiser? I understand it is recommended to remove the carpet but what problems could occur if the underlayment was laid on top of the carpet?

    Thanks.

Should any moisture find its way to the carpet, I would think you are setting yourself up for mold and mildew issues.

I am thinking of pulling out the old carpet in my 86 34EC and installing with vinyl, just curious on the approximate square footage I will need.

In the process of doing ours in allure. What is the trim piece you used on the rounded edge going into the aft?

Harbor Freight vibrating tool with the wide scraper blade. Turns the job from days into a couple of hours. If you are careful, you can get the carpet up in 1 piece, and use it for a template to build the vinyl floor
