Regarding carpeting...that black backing is garbage, but is the "nuWave" any better?
If it were, you would think they would provide a warranty, but they don't.

Any real world experience?

I don't know whose carpeting you are referring to with no warranty..........

But if you will buy your replacement set from Corinthian Marine Carpeting, whose backing is a wavy PCV and will not stick to or come apart on your deck, and it has a 3 year warranty. My cockpit carpet looks like new after more than 3 years in the Florida sun and salt:

Click on their gallery or photos.......my boat was about 1/2 way down. It is kind of a unique installation because we fit the carpet like wall to wall carpeting and eliminated the snaps and t he gaps between carpet pieces.

I have the same carpet Frank has. My carpet was purchased in 2010 still looks like new and the backing is perfect. You will be pleased with it.

Yes.

I've had NuWave for 2 yrs now and it looks like new. The backing has not deteriorated in the least.

Frank,

Your carpet looks great. I love the wall to wall look with no snaps. Does it stay in place well? How did you deal with the engine hatch?

Pete

I have the snap in carpet version of the "new wave" you describe - at the time I purchased they only had that backing in certain colors however - but it is fantastic - just finished 3rd full season and still good as new - it is definitely worth the upcharge.

Pete,

I worked with the Corinthian folks closely on fit. I made the pattern to the exact needed shape and dimension and their end product with binding was a exactly the shape and size of the pattern. As a result, all of the individual pieces fit right and stay put because the PVC backing is resilient and has a little give and I wanted big pieces and fewer seams so each carpet piece is very stable and does not move at all.

The engine hatch is shown in the middle photo just under the edge of the back seat. We made it the size of the hatch to avoid the gap around the edge. that piece is smaller and it will creep a little bit, but it isn't at all objectionable. The only time it moves is when you go down in the engine room. You have to reach under the carpet to turn the hatch closure, so all I need to do is realign that one pice while I'm there and it stays put until the next time the hatch opens.

This is certainly not a negative, but I had a carpet made for the upper swim platform while we were ordering. Corinthian's carpet is so nice that I don't use it because I don't want to leave it on the boat and get it dirty.

i was referring to the product snapincarpet.com has. They already have my template and corinthian doesn't.

I just installed Nu Wave backed from Custom Marine Carpet and I was very happy with the result. Of course, having been in for a week, I have no idea how well the backing will hold up, but it can't possibly be worse than the black stuff that is still stuck to my deck in half a dozen places. I put a thread on my install on the photo tab of this site.

The black standard stuff is just terrible. I have nuwave this year and it is much better in the cockpit although the piece i have on the swim platform has gotten 'stickie' at times --it gets beat-up with sun vs the pieces in the cockpit. I would image the stickiness might be a sign of future problems with the backing coming off due to heat.

gerryb - When areas of my backing start deteriorating, I was patching small areas with black, rubberized 'tool handle dip'. This year I coated the entire backing with "Ultra-Roof 1000" rubberized roof coating from Lowe's. It is white in color. So far, no sticking. My carpet was still in good shape, just the backing was deteriorating - it looks like this will give me at least another year or two....
