Hey all, starting research on replacing the carpet in the cabin of or 390/40 DA in the near future. Ours is a 2004 so carpet is glued down. There are theee floor hatches and the carpet goes up the sides a few inches all the way around and carry’s up the stairs on either side of the forward stateroom. Looking for any pictures or input. Not re-doing carpet. Looking for non carpet options. TIA

I think the determining factor is going to be how smooth the flooring is under the carpet. If it is too rough, you'll need to either level it with compound, or add a subfloor. Whatever you put down in place of the carpet is not going to be as forgiving and will require a smooth surface.

I've been procrastinating on this project myself, because I know it can turn into a bad haircut real quick. A lot of folks have used box-store vinyl planking with good results.

I removed our carpet and put down Infinity woven vinyl. It is very durable, stain resistant, comes in many styles, and has a foam backing,

making it pleasant to walk on.

Did you have to do any work to smooth out the subfloor?

It was flat to start with (lucky me) although the Infinity will handle contours. I did paint it with grey floor paint to seal the wood.

Was the wood under the carpet or did you add it yourself? I haven't pulled my carpet yet, so not sure what's under it. I presumed fiberglass.... I really like the woven style you put down. I was at a few boat shows and a few new vessels had it and it felt nice under foot... I was planning on putting it in as replacement carpet for the cockpit. Did you do that area too?

I have fiberglass under my snap in carpet. Was thinking of glue down wood but have issues with the two engine room hatches and the resulting joints that would be created in order to keep them operational. The woven vinyl looks great but the hatch joints would still be an issue

Plywood was under cabin floor from manufacturer. I have the same product (Infinity) on all exterior spaces in the teak style.

If I did it again I would wrap the hatches with Infinity as opposed to binding the edges

Looks like you snapped it down as opposed to glue. Any thoughts about how that worked out. Did you have to cut to fit and send out to get binding sewn on?

More pluses for the woven product is that it’s a bit cushioned underfoot, cleans up really easily and if for some reason a section gets damaged you can replace just that one section.

I "snapped " in the infinity over the factory carpet it and worked out pretty well without much labor and cost. Quint did a great job! I know others that did the same as well. I just went over the hatches and pull it back when I need access, which is not often.

Thanks for the response, the admiral likes the looks of it, I might have to do it this winter

After removing the carpet I made a template from 6 mil plastic then cut the Infinity. I bound the edges with matching Sunbrella binding and added some snaps in strategic locations. Works great.

Looks good, I am going to look into that as a winter project, thanks for the explanation

+1 what bobeast said.... I leveled floor ," best I could", made new hatch covers, used vinyl plank.View attachment 71218
This looks great. I'm planning to use the ridged vinyl plank when I tear out the carpet. Did you glue down, or use the floating method? Also, do you have any pictures of the trim on the hatches? Trying to get ideas. Thanks. Matt
