Has anyone ever installed or considered installing a cargo helmet on the rails that take the sun pad? I was looking at the rails yesterday and they reminded me of those on our jeep. We generally use the helmet for our summer trips but I was wondering how this would work out on a boat. We are already starved for storage on our 320 and a helmet for our up coming week long trip doesn't sound like a bad idea. I haven't sized it yet but a nice low profile helmet should not obstruct the view off the bow too much and they are pretty much water tight. Has anyone considered this?

Something like a Thule ski carrier might work but those car toppers like an X-cargo would cause bad visibility issues.
My bit worry would be it coming loose in rough conditions and coming through the windshield

That's an 'eck of a good idea:smt038. Please keep posting your progress on it. We could sure use more storage also.

Do you have a picture or a link?

I was thinking something similar to this. Granted these things are designed to take 50 plus mph winds. I would think they would hold up under marine conditions.

I think you've got a good idea there. Other than sight lines, which you won't know till you try it (maybe a couple cardboard boxes to simulate the cargo carrier?), I can't think of any reason why it won't work. Weight won't be an issue - the load is spread out over 4 contact points, which is plenty. The only "possible" thing I can think of is if the rails are too close to the deck for your attachment hardware. But I'm sure there's a way - even if it means getting a set of crossbars (since those don't usually need as much clearance). Good idea!
