Capturing Boating Fun

I'm a fan of the Nikon D-50 on "Sports" mode:

It doesn't sound like my Brownie Hawkeye is even worth mentioning. :smt089

And I still have some flash bulbs for it too.

We use Nikon D50 as well. Great Pictures and you do not have to have a lot of photography knowledge to get great shots. Great camera!!!!

Where did you get that Dave? Do you have film also?

No film..........just the flash with a bunch of flash bulbs. I got it as a kid and still have it.

Thanks for tips. Festivus - great shots. They remind me of what summer is like.

I just got a new Canon and I was looking for the right lense for it and that's why I asked the question.

Also have a D50... great camera... seems that Sea Ray owners also have the same taste in cameras.

Our's is the Z6 Konica Minolta. It takes great pictures. It's a 6Megapixel but so far we love it.
Here's some fun....

Did I mention how cool Photo bucket is?

Canon 20D is my camera...and as a semi-pro photographer (I'm hired to do events, glamour, portraits, etc) I can tell you that for the kind of shots you want, the high end DSLR are really overkill. There are 2 things you need for great pics on a boat-type environoment 1) spot metering and 2) a good flash. The Point and SHoots may get some shots that are close to you. But for 'action' shots', you'll want a decent SLR with a zoom lens and external flash so that you can turn the 'fill flash' on. This will take care of the BIGGEST problem with boat pics - harsh shadows caused by lots of direct sun. Spot metering off of the subject will also help with the dark shadows, but this will blow-out your highlights and cause the blue sky to appear undersaturated - brighter grey rather than a nice awesome blue. ALWAYS use fill flash feature regardless of the camera when shooting between 11-3 on a sunny day and you'll be impressed with your pics.

Todd- Beautiful pictures! What are the water temps like up there?
Thank you
Normally temps are in the 50's in Puget sound and SW B.C.
The Island shot (My Aunt and Uncle's getwaway) is 60 miles south of the famous Desolation Sound and in spots near the Island and Desolation Sound temps can reach the mid 70's.

We are conisdering a HDD Video Cam. We have not had a video camera since the were small 8 but I like the "no media" needed and a realtively long battery life which i can charge from a solar charger on the boat. Any of you use a HDD(hard disk drive) video camera and/or a solar charger?
