Looking to take our first trip to fire island from freeport on our 280DA and looking for a captain to show us the way. I hear there are some shallow areas and dont want to rely on the charts for our first trip. Any recommendations? I have a few but they havent been available.

Thanks

While I am not a captain I can probably give you some of advice. There are several of us on here that make the trip regularly. Where are you looking to go and what electronics do you have available for navigation? It's a pretty simple trip - was just out at Watch Hill last weekend.

Thanks for the reply. I have raymarine a98 MFD and raymarine radar. Not too comfortable in ocean yet so looking to take the channels in

Dont really know which area but looking for restaurants etc.

You can go to Flynn's (a restaurant) and dock there. Food and drink is available at Flynn's and it can get busy on the weekends. You'll prepay for some food and drink as part of your daily docking.

It's a short walk from there on a paved road to Ocean Beach. Along the way you will pass through Seaview - a community with a small private marina that is very nice - but limited and expensive during the season.

Weekdays you can probably get into Atlantique - but not weekends as it's a town marina for residents. Its also walking distance to Ocean Beach on the beach or a quick water taxi.

Ocean Beach does have its own dock but does not allow overnighting on the boat so its mostly for day trips or people staying on the Island in a house or hotel. Ocean Beach is the spot for choice of restaurants and touristy shops.

Your going to stay in the bay for this trip... I would go from Freeport to the Wantagh 3, then to the state channel and then up the Amity Cut. From there the East-West channel until you get under the Robert Moses. East of RM there is a lot more deep water on the north side. Then it will depend on where you are going. Set the waypoints on your MFD and follow them out and back.

Make sure you have a reservation before you make the trip. I’m waitlisted for Sailor’s Haven next weekend, and Seaview doesn’t have both nights available.
Fire Island is very busy this time of year.
