Canvas Top Attachment to Windshield

Lawndoctor,

Removing the end cap is not difficult. I'd want to go and look at it again as it has been two years since I did this.

I made the lugs out of plastic on a table saw and router table. I then drilled holes and cut them to length. I'll post pictures of some I have left over this weekend. I also think I have an engineering drawing that Taylor sent of the cross section of the extrusions. I will try and scan and post as well.

Here is the rundown on how I ended up solving the addition of snaps to a non-snap top rail.

The first picture shows all of the components:

The next picture shows the Vadney clip as supplied.

It is folded before being inserted into top rail

The piece of extrusion was sent to me by Taylor as part of our correspondence. As you can see it sits about 1/8" above the rail. On the proper rail it sits flush.

The next photo shows the plastic lug that is inserted into the end of the rail.

and then with the snap screwed into it using a faucet washer the one in the picture came out of my plumbing parts drawer, the ones actually used were thinner.

Note that the flanges between my thumb and forefinger go down over the gasket and glass. The tab on the bottom of the end cap is down inside the vertical piece of the windshield frame. To get the endcap off you have to remove the screws that connect the top rail to the vertical end frame, the screws that attach the windshield support brackets, and any other screws that attach to the top rail. Then remove the screw in the center of the endcap.

Once the screws are removed you gently pull the toprail up at the end. It only has to come up 3/16". BE GENTLE!!!!

Once the cap is off insert the lugs. I found that partially screwing the snap in allowed me to use the snap as a handle to position them. I have to make a drawing of the lug cross section and will post it later (scanner is at the office).

Once all of the lugs are inserted, it is reverse ratchet time.

Thanks very much Henry. This is great information. I haven't received the Vadney clips yet, and then it will be another week or two before I get down to the boat to see if they fit. Will let you know when I do.

Well, it turns out I have the same situation as Henry. The Vadney clips do not work, so I'm going to have to make up the lugs myself. Henry, if you happen to have those engineering drawings, and it's not too much trouble to post them, I'd really appreciate it.
