hey guys. i have a zipper that is starting to pull away from the top. i plan to replace the whole camper top next spring but want to band-aid this zipper so figured i could grab needle and thread and play Dr. on it. any special needle or thread. i know nothing about sewing or supplies/materials so special needles (size, etc) or thread (weatherproof or a certain thickness, etc.). i plan to just do this by hand. its about a 6" section

thanks

Boatman, the is very easy. You just need to buy some sail thread and a beefy curved needle. Just go to West Marine and ask for these two items. Super Simple.

Here's another idea. Bring it to a local dry cleaner that does alterations and see if they can sew it back together - should take only a few minutes. It would be better than hand-stitching even if they only use regular thread. Ask them to use thicker thread.

still another idea is use some canvas repair tape to hold the zipper in place until you get new canvas...I have used this tape and it is very strong and durable....

be sure to get 'Type A' which is for fabric....

'Type B' is for vinyl.....

Thanks guys. taking it to a shop probably won't happen. it is the main bimini portion and the poles would have to go with it and i would be too afraid of getting it back with bends or broken hardware. there is a west marine pretty close by. i was there a couple of weeks ago. may have to try that. the portion that needs fixed is where the triangular shaped piece beside the captains chair zips in and then the triangular piece snaps to the side. it is pretty tight and i would be afraid that regular thread won't be strong enough. because of how tight it pulls i'm not sure the tape would hold either?

I had the same issue and took mine off. Took the fabric off of the poles/frame and took it to an upholstery shop. For $10, they ran some stitching down the whole zipper.

You can buy UV resistant thread and other marine sewing supplies from www.sailrite.com, I do my own canvas and upholstery work and get most supplies from their website. They also have a lot of "how to" videos.

Joann fabric had the heavy duty curved needles, ordered thread of Ebay for $5. Made the same repairs a half dozen times in different places on my last boat. Easy to do.

sounds like a plan guys....and a trip to JoAnn Fabrics...lol
