I'm in the process of replacing my cam seals on my starboard engine(merc-loser 470) and couldn't figure out why the outer seal went so soon considering the hours on the rebuilt engines when I purchased the boat.
I now realize why, the outer seal was pressed in backwards. Now I'm wondering about the port engine's seals.
I'll probably hold off replacing the port since it may have been an oversight in the hack's part with the starboard and I want to splash asap. Maybe a mistake not doing it right away, but at least I can do it without yanking the engine and still use the boat.

Ok, off the soap box now!

No doubt there are alot of " part swappers" out there. Good luck and I hope the other engine is ok!

Thanks tdschafer, I'm not too concerned. Everything I've read about the job says 10+ hours, but it only takes about 2 hours total.
Some day I'll be able to afford to pay someone to do the work for me, but for now I'll just keep getting better at it. Last year I broke a valve spring starboard, pushrod port side, my onboard charger/converter went south, radar went south, freshwater pump went, shattered the port lower unit case, and had carbs troubles, but all are fixed. The best part of it all was my new radar was free for lending a hand working on a boat!
All in all, the previously mentioned problems were fixed for less than $200, and with the deal I got on the boat I'm still light years ahead!

Wow!!! I might have given up boating with that laundry list all in one season. Your military background must have helped you persevere!!! God Bless and I hope you have an easier and more enjoyable boating experience this season!!:smt001 Todd

Thanks again. I wouldn't give up. My family and I enjoy it so much between the fishing, rafting up with friends and even the dock time with our neighbors makes it all worth it.
I'm sure by the time I have all of the gremlins gone I'll be ready to upgrade to a 390 EC or something similar. I don't think I'll ever get anything newer than the '80s era SRs since I love the style and size of them compared to the later models. Unfortunately, that means I'll always have a laundry list. I'll be happy when I get diesels.

So.....are you ready to slash soon? The river is calling you..LMAO I'm sure all will work out for you, your smart with talent as well good luck dude. AKA IKYMFN.

Thanks, Steve. I'm almost there, I just need to get my truck squared away to finish my list. While you're there keep me informed on the shore power progress. Did you move to the regular slip yet?

jarhead , have you fired the 470? I'm assuming thats the 3.7 L If that is still leaking after you replaced the seal, check the camshaft surface for grooves/rust. the online miracle cure of speedy sleeves on the cam where the coolant/circ pump only worked one season for me,hope you have much better luck than i do!!

I haven't fired it yet. Hopefully by next weekend. If it only lasts this season I may just replace the cam next winter.
