I was researching how to update the registration for my MMSI number with Boat US and came accross an online tutorial created by the Coast Guard explaining the how to use a VHF. The course starts with the basics of using a VHF and then goes on to explain about "Rescue 21" and the use of Digital Selective Calling. I recommend that you spend 35 minutes taking this course.

Went through it a while back when I got my MMSI through BoatUS. Very good course.

I have used the DSC through my VHF and GPS to call friends with their MMSI and "Call them" + locate their positions and send mine. It works great.

Awesome link and perfect timing with the season getting underway.

Todd,

Do you have the the DSC connected both ways (NEMA 0183 in and out) between the VHF and Chartplotter so you can display the incoming caller location on the chart? If so can you discuss what VHF and chartplotter you have and how it is setup.

I am asking this on another post to see what folks are doing with the RM Chartplotter and Northstar VHF.
