Can you connect 99 7.4 Mercruiser engines to a garmin 7610 GPS - NMEA 2000?

Ok I'm in. Couple of questions.
If you have older Ray electronics can you use those gateways as just bluetooth? Basically plug it in to the diagnostics port, connect the blue tooth and walk away?
How does it get your fuel flow rate without a sensor?
I want it

Jonathan...the engine computer puts out that data, electronically I guess, rather than with a sender, sensor or paddle-wheel (like Floscan uses). From what I read on the webstie you can use it as either blue tooth or connected to an MFD, so likely you just need to connect your device via bluetooth (like you'd connect to your car or a bluetooth speaker) and you're set. Love to see this thing in action but website doesn't show any screenshots on and i-pad or on a GPS display, which is odd.

I will definetly be giving them a call by the end of the week to see if I'm compatible and how everything really works. Fuel flow was one of my installs this spring and hopefully this is my way of doing it. Evening else is just a huge plus to me. Especially the digital rpm guage.

Please let us know what they say. I looked closer at the other device I mentioned earlier and it looks like it keys off the analog gauges. I'd rather have the data come directly from the ECU. Like you, I'm most interested in flow data. My Raymarine a67 supposedly can display much of that info with the addition of the seatalkNG to NMEA adapters.

Interesting thread. Fox-Marine lists modules for MEFI 1 through 4. Which version would my Gen VI L29 7.4MPI's use? Alternatively, how I could tell which MEFI version my engines use?

ETA: I looked up the serial numbers of my motors in a parts manual and it looks like my engines use the MEFI-3 interface.

I found the lack of screen shots odd as well. The ECM calculates fuel based on firing the injectors. It knows what the nominal fuel pressure should be and the opening/closing of the injectors so it is simple math to determine fuel burn at a point in time. Floscan looks at the actual fuel consumed by the engine.

Neat new product.
I'll follow with great interest if anyone installs this stuff...
Unfortunately, my motors are too old technology (carbs) to use such magic.

Ok I just spent 20 minutes on the phone with Allen from Fox marine. Very very nice man and very informative on his product. First I asked about how the fuel flow works. He went on with some words I didn't understand and so on but he tested it on his boat with another set of stand alone in line meters and the biggest difference he recorded was .2 gph. All the other engine data is pretty self explanatory so I didn't get into it much. My next question was hooking up only using blue tooth. He said just plug the two boxes intuitive your motors and you need to order a backbone starter kit to supply 12v power to the boxes. Good enough for me. He said the only real issue with with twin engine boats is that you can't view both engines on one ipad or Bt device. Only one engine at a time. So basically you either need to switch between Bt connections on the same ipad or have twice I pads or devices to view side by side data. Apple app is available and android app will be mid summer. I asked about salt water conditions and coated boards. The boards ate not coated but the enclosure are fully water tight with o rings around the wires. 1 year warranty. And the boxes will also give you error codes but it's up to you to contact your ecm make (Delphi for me) and get the meaning of that code. We spoke of much more that I may have forgotten to mention so ask away

Good detective work! Did he mention if you can see two engines at once on a MFD without any "twin engine adapter" thingy?

Yes as long as your connected via nmea or n2k back bone you can view both engines on 1 mfd (as long as the mfd has the option to)

Considering what I just spent on a Merc system would y'all please excuse me while I go to the men's room to throw up.

I followed this the best I could but being not even a year with my first boat...you guys are killing me with the acronyms.

Is MFD - multi functional device?
What is BT?
I just bought a Garmin 741xs that accepts NMEA 2000 - does that mean I have it?
When we did the boat survey, my mechanic connected to a port on the engine to retrieve error codes, real engine hours. Is that where the fox device would connect? I would rather hard wire than go blue tooth to ensure I get the info when I need it.

Thank for all the help!

MFD is multifunction display, BT is bluetooth

The connector your surveyor used is where this box plugs in. You would need the unit and a NMEA 2k starter kit to get the connection to your garmin.

If anybody is interested in reviews on how to do this let me know. Finally got around to installing the fox marine unit s and I can't tell you how happy I am with the results and functionality

How far back do those units go? I have a 94 and would love to see more info.
