I am in the hunt for a 2005-07 40/42 DA with a minimum of Hardtop and cockpit air. My annual hours and usage is roughly 50-70 hours in inland waters of Chesapeake Bay. I am currently considering a 2006 40 with 8.1LHO (420HP) Mercs but am open to consider other 40/42s if you have something. Can you chime in with your experience on the 40 if you are satisfied with those engines or disappointed you did not get Diesels. Its quite a price difference between engine packages but Im just curious to hear some real feedback.

Thanks

I would look at the 420/44 and compare...size and second head is a big difference between the two... we couldn't live without those two things and your almost guaranteed diesels.

Major difference between the 39/40 and 420/44 in that era is the 40 has an optional hard door for mid cabin, but curtain is standard, where the 420/44 have a door for mid cabin AND an extra head.

You'll also find the 39/40 is most likely Gas powered and the 420/44 is most likely diesel.

Also don't discount the extra beam in the 420/44, adds a TON of room everywhere in boat.

For me we wanted the diesel, and a 40 with diesels in the Northeast when were were looking cost nearly the same as the 420's.

All things being equal I'd want diesels. The range, speed, efficiency and torque would be awesome. That said in my situation, on an inland lake with limited distances to travel, I'm happy to have the 8.1's. I typically cruise at 3500 rpms running 20 mph and burning .5-.55 mpg. We put on around 40-50 hours a season on our boat. In our area 420/44's with 8.1s are more common than diesels.

If you're not going to be traveling long distances you'll be satisfied with the 8.1s and cost savings. In some areas you'll find limited qualified diesel technicians and when you do they can be VERY expensive. If you pop an 8.1 it'll cost you $15K for a new one, a diesel will be around $50K.

We originally had a contract on a 40 gas boat but found out it wasn't the freshwater boat advertised and backed out. We liked that boat but we're now happy that we moved up to the 420. Having guests on board overnight is more comfortable to when each couple have their own head and hard door for privacy.
