I look at boats on the different web sites. I just like to look, maybe trend prices abit. But I don't understand the "call for price" crap. Is it supposed to weed out people that aren't serious about buying? Even if they posted the highest price possible they can still neg. from there. I like to see where their minds are at and if I would be just wasting my time for looking because they are in dream land. I tend to just skip over the "call for price" stuff by putting in a miminum price above zero, and most web sites eliminate them from my search. So why exclude your boat by not posting a price. Maybe they are wanting someone to offer more than what they were going to sell for? I don't get it.

I don't know if I accept the whole the price can be lower depending on the time of year.....blah, blah, blah

Yes it's easy enough to call, but if I do, just to get a starting price, they bug the heck out of you. Send hundereds of e-mails, ads, and corespondence I don't want to get. I just want to know the starting price so I can put them on the maybe, crazy, or buy list.

I have a couple of years before I get serious about buying something....but heck, if the right deal fell in my lap.......who knows.

Maybe y'all can help me understand.

That trick is used in the used car business also. I never understood it, but my guess is they want to get you on the phone for a number of reasons:
1. To see how knowledgeable you are about the product you're looking at, because
2. Often times the less knowledgeable a buyer is the more he will be paying for an item, because
3. The less knowledgeable buyer is caught up "in the ether" as car salesmen call it. That means
4. He's an emotional buyer not an analytical buyer and that means
5. He's more likely sold a product at the higher price because he can be pitched on using the product rather than the nuts and bolts of the product.

I hate it also.

Maybe they figure competitors will post there "bottom" price against their "asking" price?

I see that all the time with newer boats. Boattrader.com has alot of that. Its a marketing tactic by the dealer. They want you to call so they can tell you how great the boat is, and how good the price can be, etc.

These are the same reasons I come up with also. Sometimes I think they are so full of themselves and their ability to sell, they think they can talk you into buying.....? Guessing.

SPECULATION HERE: Maybe the sellers brokerage price is to high and they don't want to scare off buyers until they can tell them the price with a quick "offer what you want" speech.

If it is dealer owned, who knows?

My gut says they want to talk because they can "talk" many buyers into something, and they do not care about us tire kickers.

On new boats they probably cannot put their actual "selling" price on the internet, so rather than show "list" They say to call.

I don't doubt many of the reasons that you all have listed, however, I would contend that a more basic reason exists, and that is to prevent the boat from being eliminated in "dollar range" searches. No matter what price range you put in, these boats will show up!Rob

You might be on to something here Mike.

Defender has a "map price" in catalogs and web pricing because, they have some kind of agreement with manafacturers that they won't post discounted prices....but when you go to pay, the discounted price is listed in your shoping cart.

Hmmm, maybe?

Correct. For new stuff, price (other than full list) is prohibited from being shown by the manufacturer. Used product is at the dealer's discretion.
