Hi Guys.

I started to tune up my Merc 5.0 MPI engine yesterday. And get really confused over some things.

When I had replaced spark plugs and ingnition wires, I start to look at the distributor lid and see that there is a sensor there that is not connected with any cable. Have looked online and some videos. Where this is connected by a cable. Why isn't mine?

The engine is from 2002 a 5L MPI, with Bravo III.

Engine no: 0M357786
Sterndrive no: 0M149091
Transmission : 0M530774

Se attach pic.

your dist is called a HVS High Voltage Switch . All it does is supply spark to the correct plug

Thanks, So it´s OK?
I getting a little confused there, because i have a problem that my engine is not reving up more than 3000rpm and 24 knots. Then i saw this and thought i hade found my problem. But ok this is not my problem.
I think i should go a lesson in google correctly, This pic i not found when i google it.

Some other question:
Do you know if it is very important to get the entire rotor, cover etc exactly right after unloading this. Had to loose everything including the rod down in the engine and mounted it again, however, the distributor i thinks i get it little oblique maybe 5-8mm received before. Does it matter?

But hey, lots of thanks from Sweden / Mike

That's the method for the 555 ecm motor. The older mpi mefi's get the base timing locked in and you set it with a timing light.

You need to set the timing if you disturbed its original location

Okay, how is this timing work and set up?. I had out of the whole bar/rod, but lowered it as before so it went in. However, I do not know if the rotor/dist itself ended up exactly on mm equally. How to set this up.

It does look the 555 ecm with the flat cap. So follow BT's post #6

Ok, I have the "crab" style lid so it must be the same as #6 post.
Took a picture before I unscrewed it so it should be able to get to almost completely 100%. However, there was some moisture etc inside the distributor. se pic. I wonder if that is so good to have there?

2002 was the only year they used the crab "switch" setup and no cam sensor (thus nothing plugged into it) look up "installing vortec distributor" and it will show you how to "phase" it in - on '03 and up you can "check your work" by plugging in a scanner to see if the switch (distributor) and crank are in phase because they make use of the cam sensor. your distributor does look a bit corroded
