GFC, That broker must have had a poorly constructed contract not to still get paid and if he was so inept as to not be able to protect himself, how could he ever be sucessful representing others? MM
MM, I didn't cut him out of his commission. I would never do that to a person who works on commission because I've been there and done that. His commission was reduced because the seller took my offer. It was $10K lower than the last counter offer I'd gotten from him so the seller lost out on the commision he would have been paid on that $10K.

By the way, the offer the seller accepted following my letter and during our phone conversation was one he'd previously rejected per the broker's advice. My letter and pictures and our conversation got him off of dollars and talking about the fun he and his family had with the 330. He wanted it to go to a family that would continue to enjoy it. To him, that was more important than the money.

When negotiating it's very important to find out what the other party's "hot buttons" are. If you can find those out you're well on your way to negotiating a successful transaction.

Makes more sense now. As for finding the other parties "hot buttons" half of all amateurs will find the "pi$$ off button" before they find the former. :smt043

2 Boats 1 new, 1 used. The New boat went through the dealer, obvisouly. Had it own minor issues. The 1 used boat I bought was through a broker and I post my experience on her about how that went. You can search and read if you like but be wary and trust your instincts with a used boat.

Like "What's the least you'll take for it?". And do this without even seeing the item for sale.

I got my Sea Ray from a Private Seller and I got screwed. He covered up the rot with a new deck and pretty things to distract me. The rest is history.

Bought my 270DA off Craigslist. It was as described and a great value.....three other potential buyers were lined up behind me. Bought the CV-23 out of the Newspaper in 1999. All the owner wanted was cash for a snowmobile in August! He came down $1500 when he saw cash. I used the $1500 I saved on needed repairs because he was not much of a boater but a professional drinker...not sure he even got the snowmobile, Mike.

I am selling a used boat and buying a used boat currently. I will say a lot of the "buyers" (except for the couple who have my 290 under contract) have been flaky. I have had no less than 4 people talk to me on the phone for 30 plus minutes (after a few emails), schedule a time to come look......and never hear from them again.....aggravating.

Just more proof that brokers earn their money.

We at CSR are regularly recommending that folks get educated on the boats available so when they find the right one they are better equipped to deal with it. Well you started someone's education, even if that education led them to think this isn't for me. Just sad many in our society can be so rude as to not cancel.

I bought my 175BR from a private seller via local online classifieds. I bought my 280DA from a private seller via CraigsList three states over after looking for one for over a year.

I am getting ready to sell the 175BR the same way I bought it, now 6 years later. Though then it was a mess and the previous owner was ready to donate it to charity. Now it's been restored and looks and runs great. I'll take all of the lessons I learned in buying them, and use them to sell this one.

I purchased my 175BR from a private seller as well. I have a very good experience as the seller was very accommodating as this was my first boat purchase. He knew the boat very well and took us out on a couple rides to inspect it and then to get acquainted with the nuances of the 15 year old boat.
