I am in the process of buying an 01 270. It is having some work done to it prior to our taking ownership of it.We hope to sea trial the boat next week.I have only had an outboard center console before so I am trying to learn as much about cruisers as possible. I have done a lot of reading on this site but I cannot seem to find many 270 specific threads. So, my first couple of questions are:

Is there anything specific to these boats I should be checking before purchase?
What are some good tips as far as operating and maintaining this boat?
Boat stats:
About 300 hours on boat
7.4L Mercruiser Top End rebuilt in 06
Bravo 3
A/C
5KW Kohler Generator
Power steering pump replaced in '11
Fuel lines, pressure regulator and cooler replaced in '10
Exhaust manifolds replaced in '11
Work being done now:
oil cooler - replaced
lower unit- replaced
shift cable assembly and bellows- replaced
raw water pump-replaced
engine-serviced
Bottom paint
Boat was stored on a lift last 7 years at least
I will be slipping it.

Your thoughts, comments, advice, questions and the like are all appreciated.

That's a great boat. Is it the SE or DA version? They came in two widths, one trailerable and one not so much. Given how you have a generator I am going to presume it's a wider version. I have the wide one and have been very happy with mine. The hours are very low for a boat that old which is good and bad, but sounds like it has been well serviced.

Is there water in the bilge? Leaks aren't usually show stoppers but PITA to find the source of and it becomes your problem once you take ownership.

The cabin door will over time get harder to pull or be stopped in its tracks by a loosening screw. Make sure it slides okay or you have a small project on your hands that usually involves removing the helm.

The engine is solid although a thirsty one. Mine held very strong until I replaced it as a precaution due to its age. I'd mostly be concerned with corrosion/rust. If the manifolds are routinely replaced I am presuming this is a raw water cooled engine. Has it been running in salt water?

Can't think of very many model specific things but feel free to reach out should you encounter questions. I am starting to know the ins and outs of this boat a little too well after one too many projects on it.

Thank you for your reply. It is the wide 9'2" beam. The hours are low, but it seems like it was pretty well maintained.

The cabin bilge (under the stairs) does have some water in it, though not much. Where would this water come from? Rain?

Yes. It could be as simple as not having closed a porthole window and as difficult as a leak you can disassemble the entire boat to find. The portholes are notorious for eventually leaking. Leaks can also come from other sources. I wouldn't worry about it - they are relatively easy to replace and chances are the owner just left one a bit open during a rain shower.

I have the 2000 270 (9.2 beam). Love everything about it. Go for it!
