I've owned my boat for 9 years and in the past month I've experienced something really strange. About a month ago I was returning to my slip and idling down the channel. I was backing into my slip and just shifted both engines in neutral when my starboard engine died. I restarted, but it continued to immediately die. I slipped in on my port engine only.
Once tied up I gave the set screw which controls the idle on the carb a 1/2-3/4 turn which increased the idle speed of the engine when in neutral and this solved the problem-temporarily.

This past weekend the same symptoms occurred...again turned the screw 1/2 turn and engine is idling at around 850rpms. Then when I shifted into gear there was an extremely noticable CLUNK! I turned this screw back about 1/4 turn and now there appears to be a squirelly point where the boat is not engaging into gear immediately when shifted.
Does anyone know if there is a "sweetspot" which synchros the engine rpms to the shifting of the Bravo III's? Any other thoughts as to why this might be occurring after 9 years?

(BTW, original throttle cables)

Thanks,
Stuart

My 1997 290SDA Sundancer has just started doing this exact same thing on the starboard engine. When I hear it fail to fully engage, I have to give it a quick bit more power to get it to catch into gear. Otherwise, it will stall.

I have dual 5.7L with EFI and Morse electronic controls.

Hesitating catch or clunk (after shifter is in gear position) is a cone clutch about to go out. But the stalling, I'm not sure what that is. There is no load on the motor until the cone clutch engages. Maybe just a cable adjustment?
