496 mag w/Bravo III
Hello guys
I have a couple of questons. Hope someone here know the answer

1: I have a 2006 sea ray 280 sundancer, Merc 496 Mag (375hp) w/ bravoIII. What ratio do I have on my bravo III?

2: My transom assembly is not in good condition. Do I have to buy a Bravo Magnum transom assmbly or will the bravo std transom assembly work?

3: Can I use a bravo smartcraft transom assembly ?

Best regards
Magnus

Magnus,

1) From the 2002 drive prop manual:

2002280DA496 MAG BR 3 ( 375 PHP ) MCM STERN DRIVESBRAVO 32.00:1PROP, 14.25"X 22" CUP BR3 R

2) I believe mine was replaced with the standard transom assembly. Although I think the two models have morphed into the same thing. I can dig out the parts number from the invoice if needed. Just let me know.

3) Given the age of your 280, you should use the Smartcraft transom assembly.

You should also have a Merc dealer/tech contact Mercruiser. Much of the printed/internet literature is out of date with respect to part numbers. When we had ours changed we discovered a number of parts that were superseded by newer versions.

While the engine is out seriously think about replacing the starter motor, and the small interconnecting water hoses. With the engine out the add on cost is basically is just the cost of the parts. Also depending on how lucky you feel, think about swapping the hot water heater. I didn't at the time our engine was out, and the following spring I had to.

Another trick is that if you take the rear canvas and frames off and remove the transom seat, all you have to do is remove the gas struts from the hatch and tilt it all the way up and then tie it off. You won't have to remove the hatch cover, or rear seat bolster. Just remember the hatch is very heavy and it is a two man job to set it back down.

Best of luck

Henry

ps unless you have access to a serious crane, don't even think about doing it yourself. The 496 is one big chunk of metal!

If you don't have a serious crane you can always make your own. Here's my 7.4 Liter hanging from the one I made.
