When I raise or lower the outdrive with the trim or the trailer switch oil leaks from the upper unit. This leak is coming from the plate at the very top of the outdrive.

Has anyone else fixed this problem, is it just a gasket?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Thought I would reply to this so that I would at least get notified of responses from people who know.

I just had that top cap off the outdrive three days ago. The oil level in the outdrive was not clear to the top. However, I have just changed outdrive fluid, and the boat has not been operated, so it may still bleed air and fill when operated. But the normal procedure for filling the outdrive has you remove the upper oil screw and leave it open while filling oil from the bottom. When oil comes out the upper hole, then stop. The upper hole is not clear at the top, it is maybe an inch down. Just going from memory here.

It is easy to remove the top cap and take a look. The bolts, at least on mine, are 12 point. They should come out easily, and the cap should pull straight up. The cap does contain some hardware, including needle bearing, so you should use caution. Mainly you will want to keep everything very clean if you do this. You might want to have a replacement gasket on hand. Actually, I don't see how it could leak there unless the gasket is bad or the bolts are not tight.

The gasket on top is not a flat gasket, it is round. With the cap off, what you see is a round hole in the top of the upper unit, and a the cap also has a round section that fits snugly down in this hole. The round gasket goes in a slot around that.

Looking online, it does not look exactly like what I remember. Maybe I should stop, and maybe someone who knows better will respond.

The tilt system though I think should be completely separate from this part of the outdrive.

If oil is leaking out, it must be coming from somewhere. Do you have an outdrive oil reservoir on the engine? If so, are you needing to add oil to it?

Here are some pictures of what it looks like. The first is just of the top of the unit with the bolts backed out. When you put them back in, the proper torque is 20 ft-lb. They are 3/8 inch, 12 point.

The second is looking down into the top of the outdrive with the cap removed. Looks like I could use two O-rings here, though in the next photo you only see the small one. I know the large one is on order, but maybe not the small one.

Then here is looking at the inside of the cap. There are parts here that want to stay here. None want to fall out.

Here is a closeup of the O-ring after it has spent a few years compressed.

And here should be an exploded view of these parts.

Great Guys. They were squeezed me in 2 days before Memorial day weekend.

it was just like you said. 4 bolts and pull up. 2 o-rings are in there and the smaller of the 2 had gone bad.

After seeing in done and with these posts its something I could have done.

Thanks!
