bravo 3 shift cable end and linkage problem

First time out this summer been riding all day pull into the dock drive to reverse gets hung up in reverse will not go into drive or neutral. get it out of the water pull the drive off. see the cable end is not in the shift linkage slide nothing's broke that I can see what would cause the cable to come out of the shift linkage considering the linkage slide keeper flap is contained in the housing.

When removing the drive, the shift cable disengages from the linkage. The upper flap of the linkage has clearance to open once it’s outside the “tunnel” of the drive.

Linkage latch is broke? Give that a good look and the end of the cable

The Drive is pressed up against the bell housing when you’re in the water. During removal, as you slide the drive off the studs, the latch has space to open and release the cable end.
