I bought a new lower unit for my Bravo 3 duo-prop (corrosion issue) Has anyone replaced the lower unit? I am a DIY guy and have mechanical skills but don't want to screw it up. I know where all the bolts are but are there any things I should know? I have new o rings but do I use any silicone? Any special tools to take props off? Do I keep it in neutral ? Planning on keeping the outdrive on the boat.....just changing the lower. Any help would be appreciated.

This is a straight forward replacement. Doesn’t matter what gear it’s in. Bravo 3 gear selection takes place in the upper case.

There are 6nuts, 1 bolt and the speedometer pitot to remove.

There is a large 2 3/4” nut that holds the forward prop on. This will be the only special socket needed.

Drain the oil.

Just use some grease on the o rings to hold them in place during reassembly.
There is a splined collar about 3” long that connects the upper and lower shafts. Just slide it on the Lower shaft before installing the new lower unit.

THANK YOU ! I saw something about a "coupler" in a post on another page, you cleared up the confusion with the 3" splined collar.

I mentioned it because it could stay on the upper shaft when you remove the lower unit.

Then old Murphy’s law would kick in...... go into the garage for a tool, the coupler falls off and rolls away before you get back..,.you’d be pulling your hair out trying to figure out what’s wrong when it’s reassembled and the props won’t engage!
