So, I had my bottom painted.

I told them to sand blast the bottom and put two coats of barrier and two coats of ablative on her...

Neither the shaft or the props were painted before, and they didn't ask if I wanted them done.

When I got to the boat I saw that they painted the shafts and props...I was not happy this was done without discussing or confirming.

I'd like your guys thoughts on this. I just have a vision of these things being chipped and harder to clean now and I'd like your opinion on the yard deciding to do this and your experience with running gear painted.

My (about to be former) 44da was done this way last year for first time. In peconic we get a lot of growth in a warm summer. Boat ran perfect (no impact on performance) and gear was clean of all growth end of season.

My experience is different. I never choose that to be done, it will chip off no matter what and you will loose performance that's a fact. Now regarding the yard, have them sand blast the shafts and props, if you didn't ask for it, they shouldn't do it. Make sure to protect critical areas from the sand blasting to penetrate..., good luck.

How well it lasts depends upon the type of paint and the application procedure. Down where we are, you have to paint the hardware, or have a diver scrape the metals about avery 10 days in the summer. We use ablative paint on the hull and a modified epoxy primer (Interprotect 2000) and a hard paint on the metals. There is a trick to getting the the primer and paint to stick.......follow the wait/dry times on the primer explicitly and solvent wash (acetone) the cleaned, bare metals immediately before applying the first coat of primer.

If you hardware has ablative paint on it, the money is wasted since it isn't going to last. If the metals were primes with the barrier caot but now solvent washed, you will have to repaint the hardware in about 12 months

Of course, a lot of this depends upon where you are boating t his year and happen to store the boat next winter.
