Boot stripe removal

Did you try some Acetone? That seems to be the goo cleaner of choice at the boatyard I use. Just don't get it on any decal sections you want to keep.

Go to an auto body supply, they sell whats called an eraser wheel. It goes on your drill, will remove decal and glue. greatest thing I have ever seen

Thanks Jason, Dennis, Bahama. Don't have access to power a hair dryer. Search function sucks

Yup. That's why I put those threads in my special "reference" folder. Somewhere there is a thread on "how to search easier"... but I can't find it.... :smt001

This topic comes up now and again and it's easier to just paste those links in, rather than typing away each time. Between those two links, it has pretty much everything you'd want to know. But, the eraser tool is my favorite. Goo-gone (or whatever it's called) or acetone work great - acetone sometimes dulls the gelcoat, but it can be brought back very easily... arrgghhhhh... there I go typing away, anyways!

Thanks Dennis. I appreciate everyones help. I'm usually good at searching but I'm too tired after trying to get my POS Glomex antenna back on. :)

I'm going to save you alot of time and effort. I did the same thing to my 330 Sundancer. Tried Acetone, WD-40 and every cleaner I could find, and nothing would touch it. Spent 2 days trying. Then a friend came over with "Goof off" and a rag, 10 minutes later I was done!!!!!

Hey Bridog, I used Acetone, works great like others have said (wax area when done). I've read the thread about your Glomex problem. Go get yourself a new coax, take the right arch half moon panel off, i also removed two right speakers for coax access, I then attached the new coax to the old and fed the new one through, giving myself the extra slack needed at the top to connect to the glomex. Problem solved/back in business. PM me if ya have any questions.

Hey dicor, Is there any reason you want to remove this? Last year I helped a friend do this on the exact same boat. Two days worth of wet sanding and buffing later it looked good. Reason is the adhesive plus the sun dis colors the gelcoat under the stripe and with all the glue removed you could very wel see the left over. Was not a fun job. Having said that his boat always sets out in the sun. Maybe yours won't be that bad.

Just a small point... the gelcoat under the tape is the original color of the boat. The tape actually protects that area from fading. Many times, you can even feel the difference as the area under the tape is slightly raised - due to many years of buffing and the surrounding gelcoat being worn away.

Yes your right and that makes perfect sense. Just a pain to make it match the rest of the gelcoat.

The starboard stripe is pretty beat up. I don't really know why or how, it was like that when I bought it. I plan on replacing it with a 2" stripe from West Marine.

If you already have the stripe off and are just left with the glue, 3M makes adhesive remover. That stuff works great. you can get it in an spray can or a 1 qt can, like acetone. Apply liberaly, wait a bit, and wipe off.

I agree.....this is the greatest product to remove old tape stripes. I used acetone after and I couldn't be happier with the results!!

I started taking mine off last night. Its an '88 with original stripes. I warmed it with a heat gun and it came right off, glue and all.

I too started my stripe removal on my 2001 310 this morning. Expected the worse, as the temperature was in the high 40's and a stiff wind was blowing. Used heat gun, plastic scraper, and fingers. Went well! Better than I expected. Did one side in about 1 1/2 hours. Used Goo Gone, soft brush, soap and water and towel for clean up. Will tackle the other side on Saturday. Again, I was pleasantly surprised how easily this went.
